  • They're not. They alternate between "male" and "female" names.

Hurricane David in 1979 claimed over 2000 lives. It was a category 5 hurricane.

You can tell which storms were particularly devastating by going through the list of retired names.

  • Actually they aren't. they alternate boy girl alphabeticaly and world wide every cyclone tornado etc is named in that same order by the meterologists its just been a load of luck that some of the larger ones to cause news worthy damage have been girls names.

  • I think they alternate years. Lately it's been female names that were the noteworthy ones, but when I was growing up we had Hurricane Bob, Andrew, Hugo, etc.

    • @MissPanda become a saint
". People living in the Caribbean Islands named storms after the saint of the day from the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar for the day on which the hurricane occurred such as "Hurricane San Felipe". When two hurricanes struck on the same date in different years the hurricanes would be referred to by names such as "Hurricane San Felipe the first" and "Hurricane San Felipe the second". "
