Do you pronounce beta with a 'b' or a 'v'?

Beta is supposedly the greek letter Β which is pronounced veeta, but since it's written in English with a b do you pronounce it beeta? or beta?

  • C... anything else is savagery. I actually watched My Girl last night for like the first time since the early 90s, and the main girl's name was pronounced like "VAY-da", and I spent the whole movie wondering what the hell kind of name that is. Maybe it was really Beta and they pronounced it that way, haha.

What Guys Said 13

  • How the Greeks say it is actually irrelevant. The more pressing matter is if you say:

    Bee-ta (the correct British way)
    bay-ta (the incorrect American way).

You ought to amend your poll.

    • I forgot bay-ta was an option, but I can't change the poll. But veeta is the correct way, since it's a greek letter

  • The few times I try Greek I'll say Vassilis, not Bassilis.
Trying Spanish I'll ask for a cerbeza, not a cerveza.
    In Dutch and French a B stays a B.

  • Word isn't even in my vocabulary, sorry. 💪

  • In a Modern Greek context I'd say veta, and in an Ancient Greek context I'd say beta; both as in better, not bay. In English, as in "beta male" which I've seen on here too often, I'd probably pronounce it as bay-tsuh.
