What makes water pipes burst?

Updates:
If it burst during winter, the most likely scenario would be that the water in the pipe froze and expanded.

  • At my age, not making it to the bathroom on time would be the most likely scenario. However in winter water freezes and expands, sometimes water pressure is too high and pipes may have a weak spot or bad joint where they connect to a T or Y.

  • Odd asking that here but they burst after part of them freeze and crack the pipe and the water flows out the crack
