Are rich kids unhappy because their parents objectify them?

The friends I've had who come from rich families are not happy people. From what they've told me, they're not happy because they never feel that their parents really care about THEM. They're treated more like objects who are expected to "succeed" and project a certain "image" socially. Usually their parents don't care about things like emotions or bonding.

Is this true, do most people from wealthy families feel "objectified" in this way?

  • That's the stereotype, but it's not always true. I don't know how common or uncommon it is. It's a popular theme in movies and TV shows, though - the rich kid who has everything but his parent's love.
