  • It has done so, around 20,000BC when Mankind started living in society
Some people, probably priests, smarter than the others, figured out some basic rules they thought would help a lot.

Back then those people were an uncivilized bunch, raping, stealing killing and fighting all the time.

Religion provided the first laws, judges, doctors, shrinks, social service.
Without it society would probably never have developed.
But that's long ago. Later it was used as a tool to control people.
Today? :- I see mainly problems with it.

    PS,
Mustapha Kemal (Ataturk) said about Islam, "It's a rotting corpse, attached to the state."

  • People who think religion causes wars are very ignorant on human history. The biggest threats to the world today other than isis are atheist countries like china, russia, north korea... etc. so of the most blood hungry leaders are atheist.

  • Yes, religion is only as bad as those wielding it.

It has inspired acts of charity and kindness as much as war.

    • How is religion causing bigotry? Can you define bigotry for us?

    • Show All
    • Explain your logic please. You never defined the word bigotry.

    • I did. Bigotry= hate, I simplified it for you. Do you not know what bigotry is?

  • Yes religion has benefited the world in countless ways even if it is being used to keep the populas in line. True a few wars have been fought over the differences in religious ideals but honestly ww1 was started over a single assassination. ww2 was started because Germany wanted to expand. If someone wants a war they will start one regardless of a good reason. Why do so many people only look at the dark side of religion. You also have to look at all of the good and beauty the different religions of the world have brought and created. Just go look in a museum and you will so many beautiful religious art works.

  • Of course it has. Theology aside it is one of the oldest institutions on Earth. The monasteries were the ones who first produced books in significant numbers before the printing press. Also arts, music, literature, architecture, medical care, philosophy. Churches in Europe have some of the oldest archives on the planet and many are available for free. Not to mention priceless items that otherwise would've been lost. All religious institutions run in some way charity organizations to help the poorest people.

  • In my opinion the religious movements were precursors for our social and ethical evolution. They were important. They were present probably since neolithic.

  • you talk about religion as a whole its not one thing applies to all kind of thing, christians when they follow christianity for real not just read in the bible and go home become very peaceful , can't say the same about other religions, but its not one , and anyone who says all religions are the same is very ignorant.

  • It has given pros and cons.
In earlier centuries the (christian) church (in central europe) had many tasks. People coming together. Helping the poor. Helping those with psychological problems (confession). Forcing indirect morals to those with power (for the romans it was completely no problem to kill a slave brutally just for fun).
Weither or not those are better than the cons is left to the belief of the individuals.
