well my grandfather died the last year (he was 81) during sleep, i was just wondering why do most people die during sleep? i read somewhere that our brains are not as active as when we are awake but they still active and our heart rate drops when we sleep, so why does most people die during sleep?

Sleep decreases your heart rate, and your body enters into an idle homeostasis mode. This makes it more likely for cardiac arrest to occur, and also, older people have weakened intercostal muscles which makes them more prone to sleep apnea (trouble breathing during sleep).4
