Interested in people's feelings regarding Affirmative Action. Are you for it or against it? do you see it as just or unjust discrimination?
for those outside of America, affirmative action was/is a policy that began in the late 70s to try and bridge what was seen as a racial, economic, ethnic, and gender gap of opportunity. Programs were put in place to try and boost the number of minorities in various arenas like grade schools, colleges/universities, and the workplace.
this is a common exercise in debating. building a case for the side you don't necessarily agree with.

I'm all for it. It's imperative that we have a more diverse police service for one. It would probably encourage more community outreach and foster understanding.
I can understand people's frustrations about it to some extent though. There have been Asian-American groups that have sued Ivy League schools for denying them to allow for more non Asian people to get in. It must suck being qualified for something and being denied to great schools because there's 'too many' Asians. It's interesting that there are groups from the so-called 'model minority' who are annoyed by affirmative action in education. I tend to think terms like model minority are pretty damn racist though but that's just me. Asian-Americans are approaching white Americans in things like net worth so they will probably get hit by more of that in the future too.
Even though I think it has some flaws, the odds are stacked against certain groups more than others in the US. There are some groups where the majority have far better access to opportunities and other groups where there's a severe lack of opportunities.
Do people think it's just coincidence that net worth is much higher for some people than it is for others? Steps should be taken to get people out of this cycle of very little change for black and Hispanic people especially. There's so much untapped potential that's getting ignored simply because schools are a disgrace in certain areas over others.
Affirmative action isn't perfect but I still think there's a need for it is basically what I'm saying.3
