Why is Eastern Europe so socially undeveloped compared to Western Europe?

I don't get it, we are one continent, but i swear to god that Eastern EU is at least 100 years behind soically like in terms of discrimination, freedom , equal rights and so on.

  • A lot of the eastern European countries today used to be part of the Soviet Union and we all know how well that communism experiment went lol
Give them time. They'll catch up eventually , especially with how well the EU is going these days. The whole PIIGSS situation and all.

What Guys Said 13

  • It is all as a result of different political systems of government, and their priorities.
Unfortunately many people got used to their own environment, and until there was more TV, and more importantly now, the internet. People thought their living standards were the normal everywhere.
With better improved communications people have realised that there is a better world out there.
That is what has led to many of the recent conflicts between rulers and the people, seeking democracy.
The worst being Syria, where president Assad rules, and would rather murder his own people and ruin his country, than give in to full democracy.
The main function of the EU is to bring harmony between the nations of Europe, improving living standards and opportunities for millions, but it comes at a cost to the richer nations, led by the UK, France and Germany.
Now of course the UK has had a flawed referendum, which led to a slim majority to leave, abandoning their neighbours, and the new Prime Minister is leading the UK population, like lemmings, to ruin, by abandoning the EU.

  • They were heavily influenced by the Soviet Union which you know, wasn't the greatest in terms of ideologies. Many of the people there were raised that way and it may take a long time for them to get with the program. It's unfortunate but that's just how history went.

  • The Wall came down in 91 thats partly why. People in East Germany didn't even have cars and if they did they were these small beaters that only a few people had. Combination of the Cold war and fighting with Communism which was basically Washington DC vs Moscow. Russia was so Gung hoe on besting the US with everything they forgot about their people essentially from WWII to the 90s

  • It is influenced by system.
The theory of Soviet Union is almost opposite of theory in western Europe.
But they can change very soon like China.
I just see china, what they step further to western system they worried it again from system of soviet union.
I heard that you want to go to see doctor in poland that you need to wait for 4 years after you apply.
So they have a joke they should apply to medicince university since getting sick.

  • I wouldn't say they are "underdeveloped", they are just more conservative than Western Europe.

I'm not saying I agree with their politics, but despite what you liberals believe, any political belief besides your own isn't automatically "outdated".

      They are WAY more conservative.

I agree. Again, that doesn't necessarily make them "underdeveloped". I find that a lot of liberal people have quite the superiority complex.

Their society simply went in a different direction than ours. The whole world doesn't have to agree with you.

Not saying that you necessarily think that way, I am just under the impression that you are looking down on Eastern Europe for disagreeing with you. Pardon me if it was a false assumption.

  • The problem is that you think your bullshit "democracy", "freedom", "equal rights" and all are more advanced while they are more fucked up than any kind of discrimination. Your salaries are better and everything about jobs and money, but the social aspect? You are fucked there

  • I agree, even Western Europe is more ahead than the United States. They need to get more modern or stay behind forever.

  • In many ways they were more advanced. You're looking at things from a western view.

First people in space, nikola tesla invented modern electricity, periodic table, many medical and scientific advancements, Microsoft has more Romanian engineers than any other country, Soviet scientists won acclaim in several fields. They were at the cutting edge of science in fields such as mathematics and in several branches of physical science, notably theoretical nuclear physics, chemistry, and astronomy. The physical chemist and physicist Nikolay Semenov was the first Soviet citizen to win a Nobel Prize, in 1956 among several other Soviet Nobel Prize winners and the mathematician Sergei Novikov was the first Soviet citizen to win a Fields Medal in 1970 followed by Grigory Margulis in 1978 and Vladimir Drinfeld in 1990.

  • Read a history book. Western Europe was ahead of everyone for everything. Only reason Russia ever became powerful was because they were smart enough to copy Western Europe. Google = The Enlightenment.
