Is Oklahoma considered a southern state? If not, what is it?

Oklahoma is a plains state... kansas, nebraska...
Southern in a sense that it is in the southern half of the US, but has little in common with the southern states as it has a distinct history that came about separately from the typical confederate states. But in the same sense New Mexico or Arizona would be southern as well.
When people say, I wanna travel to all 50 states, oklahoma would be among the states they travel through on the way to somewhere else. That stop over in the airport because the weather in denver was too bad to land and they never left the airport? It forever counts as a vist to oklahoma because there is no good reason to ever go back. Flew over it on the way to Utah? Hey, they went to Oklahoma... it's brown and filled with cows and miles of interstate that thankfully go somewhere else.
