  • Regardless whether this is a US dominated site, what the U. K. does is not America's direct business.

I believe the UK is fine without guns.

    • It's like saying the BBC is a British site therefore every country who reads it must conform.

The web doesn't work like that.

  • Canadian here.

The UK's gun laws as they currently stand are a typical knee-jerk, tabloid hysteria reaction to Dunblane.

There are huge cultural differences to be taken into account too - people in the UK are basically counting on their government to protect them (in the form of police and the army) whereas the US believe that when it really comes down to it, you need to be able to defend yourself when the chips are down.

    • It was just a question on why you thought an event a good 200 years after guns were around you thought was THE reason.

Sorry for bothering. I can't be bothered to have a conversation with you if I'm going to be questioned over every little thought trail.

      Bye.

    • actually I think you have a very good point here, that its exactly how we think in Uk.

    • So, why are guns used to protect the president?

    • You show up and say, "I am afraid of guns. I don't know anything about them. What can you teach me?" Many (most?) of the people you encounter this way will be the friendliest, nicest people you ever met. Someone will take you under her wing and teach you. She will start with the basic safety rules. "Gun nuts" take the safety rules very seriously, just like professional race car drivers are extremely safe on the road.

Over time, you will learn that a gun is nothing more than a tool. It is people that use it for bad or good. It is people that are bad or good.

We have a fundamental human right to self defense. Whether someone chooses to be a victim or chooses to resist is entirely personal. But in order to not be a victim, one must have an appropriate tool. You could choose a baseball bat, a tomahawk, or a hunting knife, but nothing is more effective and practical than a gun.

A 6'4" 250 pound rapist is no match for a 5'2" 105 pound woman with a 9mm pistol who knows how to use it.

    • From your profile, you appear AA. Many of the gun control laws we have owe their roots in Jim Crow, originating to deny blacks the ability to defend themselves against white aggressors. Law enforcement in parts of the country at the time refused to enforce the law against whites who attacked blacks (and were often the attackers). A number of black ministers and churchgoers armed themselves, becoming a militia of sorts, to defend black families against violent racists, in spite of the law. Times have changed, and so has the nature of the threat. AA's are several times more likely to be a victim of a violent crime than whites, and most likely the criminal is also black. My AA next door neighbor (we live in an upper class/lower rich neighborhood) is terrified a black thug will follow him or his wife home (they have nice cars). They both carry guns. This past summer, I was teaching a 26 year old AA woman handgun basics, as she wanted to get a concealed carry permit herself.

  • Just take a look at our gun crime stats and those in the US... question answered!!

    • yes something like 35 deaths v 3,000 food for thought

    • If you looked at the crime statistics, you would learn that in the US, over half of all murderers are black, even though they represent about 12% of the population.

You would also learn that in the UK, violent crime is higher than in the US and that the British police have a different way of reporting murder. In the US, if someone is murdered, it is counted as a murder. In the UK, a victim is not counted unless there is a murder investigation opened. (Chicago tried a fraud like that too to make their murder rate look lower, but got their hands slapped for it).

Unless you are black, living in a US city, your chances per time of being a victim of a violent crime is higher in the UK.

  • Nope, it's definitely a good way to be

  • You'd think if their people wanted guns, they would be demanding them. The UK and US are vastly different.

The government is wrong, the gangs get guns and we don't. How is that fair?

I just want one to call my own, I'd clean it , put it on my wall, sleep with it etc. Is it possible for a man and a gun to become friends? I think it can be done

  • Personally I'm happy with us not having guns. ONE of my reasons for having this opinion is the fact that over here we have FAR less instances of gun violence than the US, but of course this is partially because America is so much bigger, but even still, we do have less gun violence in England than America does in some states.

Disclaimer: I am not calling Americans violent or dumb, i'm talking about the gun law, not all Americans, so calm down if you were about to comment something along the lines of "Not all of us!" i know that.

  • Gun laws didn't stop the terrorist attacks in France, just saying. Americans have a soldier mentality, Europeans simply kneel and beg for their lives. I feel safer with a weapon.

  • No it's better here this way. We don't see school shootings every month, or year for that fact. For the 21 years I've been alive, i;ve never heard of a mass shooting here.

    • We are allowed shotguns by the way but that's only for specific people

  • It's wrong to make them illegal. But most of the US's lax laws are not the answer either.

As with most things a middle ground like Germany is probably the best solution.

    • interesting, not something we think about. guns here are very rarely used.

  • The U. K. Is a nanny state that regulates even the PORN people watch, tracks their internet usage, has CCTV cameras everywhere, etc.

Them not having guns seems like a minor issue in comparison

    • I often carry a gun. The benefit is for the person carrying it.

I have a friend who did not become a victim of robbery because he was carrying a gun. He didn't even have to draw it from his holster, the two robbers ran off as soon as he pulled his jacket back.
