To my knowledge, only in a Brittany Spears song. Guys like to be treated "like men" -- confusing when they are whining for the remote or who's turn it is to do the dishes/laundry, I know, BUT in public they want to be "the man"... "Sweetie" or "Love" are nice to use if you stand close, touch his arm/shoulder and give a little peck to get his attention. Honestly, the touch does more than the name calling since guys register the auditory stuff at a bit of a delay if they're into a girl, but the combo never fails.
Formulaic? Sure, but unless you have the sort of relationship where you can just call out "Hey Babe!" from across the room (in front of friends and family without him blushing) or whisper "Hi Sexy" into his ear in greeting, it's best to keep things simple and certain.
You're pretty young, so I'll just add "proceed with caution" -- keep it clean, missy. ;)

Im sure they don't mind being called either I call my boyfriend baby and he calls me babe I'm sure he won't mind. Not really a difference between the two.
I like being called anything by my Girlfriend though "babe" and "baby" are nice to hear.
