How can I best memorize a restaurant menu?

I'm gonna be a server at red lobster soon and I need to memorize the menu before I start training next week. Is there a rule of thumb on how to memorize a menu or a standard procedure on how to do it? There are two menus, the lunch and dinner. There is only a one page difference between the two menus. After I start training I'll have to serve my managers as a way to be tested on serving. Its a way to to become an official server. So I also need to be able to describe the food to guests well. I'd appreciate any help possible and I'll answer any questions anyone has. Thanks! :)

  • Visualization.

    Imagine you need to memorize 20 different things, from 1-to-20. You don't need to memorize them in order, in fact, you need to be able to recall them at any order. For example, you need to be able to recall the name of the menu item if someone says, "oh, I think I'll have whatever #16 is," or "what exactly is #8?"

    How dafuq do you do that, you may be wondering. Here is how:

    1. Tree (one bark)

    2. Switch (two possibilities, on or off)

    3. Tripod (or three-legged stool)

    4. Car (four doors, wheels, seats, etc.)

    5. Glove (five fingers)

    6. Gun (revolver)

    7. Dice (lucky sevens)

    8. Ice Skates (or skating ring, think figure eights)

    9. Cat (nine lives)

    10. Bowling (ten pins)

    11. Soccer Goal Post (eleven players, also, goal post looks like an 11)

    12. Eggs (twelve eggs in a dozen)

    13. Witch (Friday the 13th, unlucky, etc.)

    14. Gold (14k Gold)

    15. Paycheck (you get your paycheck on the 15th)

    16. Candles, Girly Party (sweet sixteen)

    17. Magazine (Seventeen magazine)

    18. Truck (eighteen-wheeler)

    19. Golf (19 clubs in a golf bag)

    20. Pack of cigarettes (20 cigarettes in a pack)

    You can of course go on all day with these . . . Blackjack for 21, Twins for 22, Michael Jordan for 23, Hourglass for 24, etc. You get the point.

    Now, how do you memorize?

    Memory works in very funny ways. The more simple the information is to remember, the more simple an idea is to forget. Conversely, the more complex the information is to remember, assuming it is remembered, the more difficult it is to forget. Plus, don't forget about repetition - until something gets drilled into your head.

    Let's see an example of this in action. Suppose a list looks like: 1. vibrators, 2. vagina, 3. poop, 4. lube, 5. blowjob, 6. **** rings, 7. anal, 8. p*rn, 9. masturbation, 10. deep penetration, 11. gang banging, 12. Playboy, 13. handjob, 14. pimp, 15. prostitution, 16. stripper, 17. sex tape, 18. cocaine, 19. marijuana, 20. penis. How would you memorize that list? You would visualize the following:

    1. A tree with vibrators growing on it;

    2. A switch with a vagina-looking cover;

    3. A stool with poop on it;

    4. Using lube instead of oil on your car;

    5. A p*rnstar performing a bj with white gloves on;

    6. A shooting competition here you have to hit inside the **** rings;

    7. Sex dice that rolled on "anal"

    8. A p*rn scene where the guy and girl are figure-skating and having sex;

    9. Masturbating to your cat having sex;

    10. A girl sticking bowling pins in her va-jay-jay;

    11. The coach being gang banged by the opposing soccer team;

    12. a dozen Playboy models around Hugh;

    13. A witch giving you a handjob;

    14. A pimp covered in gold chains and rings, and teeth, etc.

    15. A hooker being paid by check;

    16. A male stripper coming out of a girl's cake;

    17. A story about another celeb sex tape on Seventeen Magazine;

    18. Truck filled with cocaine;

    19. Golf bag hiding marijuana;

    20. Penis-shaped cigarettes.

  • Take the menu and remember enough to pass your training. From there, you'll learn the menu after a week or two of working with it. Keep in mind the most popular dishes, the soups and salads, know all the drinks, and always see what the specials are.

    That being said, I probably have half the red lobster menu memorized anyways. I love it there :p

  • Bring a menu home with you and memorize it.

  • The worst thing you can do is read the menu over and over.

    Go on their website and get a proper visualization and description of each menu item and read them out loud. Don't skim. Observe and learn. Know the ingredients.

    At the end of the day you'll have three trigger points that will lead you to making the proper references. You'll have an audio trigger, a visual trigger, and a concept trigger. When you start working, you'll be able to make references by taste and feel, and at that point memorizing won't be a problem.

  • You can't memorize them all. You should just take a picture of them and memorize them at home.
