They have priorities and objectives in life that they seek to accomplish at the forefront of every single day. If those priorities and objectives consume most of their day, then everything gets put on hold. It could take a day or a couple days. Maybe he'll never get back to you.
The good news is, these guys obviously have lives.
The bad news is, you're on the peripheral. You're not really part of that.
Girls do the same thing only I've found that they are more willing to pacify their social herd of sheep than guys are.
Women tend to read too much into things like that. So women are more likely to takes steps to correctsuch behavior. A guy tends not to think to much about what it means as much as he should.
Their priority is something other than responding to messages from others.

i'm a girl and I sometimes take days to reply even in the early stages of dating. I think it depends on a person's schedule and tendencies to procrastinate.

For women, communication and human interaction is primary. For men it's not...other priorities take precedence. It's just that simple.
Oh this is COMPLETE bullsh*t.
As a male, I respond lightning fast. Women rarely respond in a timely fashion.
That's just what men do. We aren't as intense about our friendships as women are.
I have some female friends who take a very long time as well, so its not just a guy thing
