Models go braless/commando because the designer is trying to showcase the clothing in their collection in the way he or she originally designed. Lingerie is seldom showcased in the same collection as couture or RTW even if the lingerie is by the same designer. Most often, however, design houses do not have their own lingerie line. As such, it makes little sense for the designer to showcase someone else's lingerie - drawing focus away from their own clothing (unless, of course, it is a collaboration with the lingerie line in question, or the designer intended for specific pieces of lingerie to enhance his or her designs on the runway from an aesthetic standpoint). Generally speaking, the designers of Rodarte don't want the audience leaving their show talking about the cute La Perla bra the model was wearing on the runway. The creation of unwanted 'lines' by underwear under clothing is another valid concern.
In reality, it is up to a 'normal' girl to decide how comfortable she is with or without underwear while wearing an item of clothing. So long as it doesn't break any public decency laws, there is no reason why she shouldn't opt to go braless or commando. I know many women who do. Usually, large-chested women cannot afford to go braless, though.
There is only one tthing which is worse than a VPL (visual panty line, in case you guys didn't know) in every day life and that is a VPL in a situation that everybody is watching. That is why people who are judged on appearances, go commando. Provided, of course, they have the body for it - but if they haven't they would be where they are. It happens a lot on TV as well.
I would say that they should just do what feels comfortable
Ramp models or even models otherwise whether men or women are what they are only to show a live effect of the designs by the designer.
They don't have a choice on what they wear including their underwear / garments at least while on the ramp & off the ramp if they repeat going the same way it's their choice for reasons best known to them i. e. could be (1) feel good factor (2) shows off the outfit the best way it should (3) any of the reasons any general man or woman could have for going commando / braless :)
There's no comparison of clothing choice between those who are on a ramp (read as live mannequin) and individuals who act out of choice :)
Normal girls can ofcourse go commando or braless, no one stops them and those that do are insecure, conservative or have logical reasons :)
Probably waaaaay out of my depth here, but I would think it would have more to do with the quick change needed between showing each item on the runway, if you need to change clothes quickly you could snag on underwear.
Anyhow that would be the practical reason I think.

Everyone should. underwear is bad for you, in girls it traps in the heat and moisture causing more utis/yeast infections. In guys the heat being held in closer mean lower sperm count cause sperm need lower than body heat to live.
Bras also are bad for you, growing up with one means the normal supportive tissues dont mature as much and it leads to having issues with sagging and back pain much earlier in life.
Everyone has a choice of freedom, but following local government guidelines.
