Does A Foul Mouth Mean A Foul Personality?
|
Many people are always saying that people who swear don't have a very nice personality. And, mostly, I can see what they mean. It usually implies that the person in question lacks in some form of intelligence or are unable to express themselves in any other way. The personality under all the swearing and exterior, may, also, not be pleasant.
But I do know people who tend to swear a lot, but are actually quite nice. So is it just some messed up people that swear who give everyone else a bad name?
Personally I rarely swear, and when I do it's usually out of anger or fear. But I do believe F, N and C words are totally unacceptable and I would never say them nor write them.
Also, is another reason for the association with swearing and a bad personality to do with the type of people who swear? As many people who are brought up in rough, less educated areas tend to swear more than people in a higher class and with more education. I think this is the fact that many have grown up with people just like them who swear a lot and, also, the fact that they do not have enough education to find other words or express themselves in other ways. So therefore, in some ways, it is not their fault. But I do realize that not everyone fits into these "stereotypes." I'm just using general examples and do not believe that everyone is like this.
I also believe that what someone says and how they say it reflects a person's personality. So maybe the use of strong language could reflect a strong personality and not necessarily a fowl mouth that reflects a fowl personality.
I think swear has been stereotyped, very much, to people who have bad personalities, which I think is very unfair on the people who are the exceptions to this stereotype. Though, I can see how this stereotype has been formed and I don't believe that swearing is right.
