I met Tran in Australia at a resettlement center shortly after my family left Vietnam. We were teenagers and spent a lot of time together since our families were next door to each other and were from a similar social background.
I never thought I would see him again after we left. Two years later some cousins visited us from France. They had many pictures of their friends in France and there was Tran! With his brother and sister! They gave me his e mail address when they got back to France and I sent him a message right away. He wrote back after a week and talked about all the memories from Australia and how much he liked France. He said he would try to see me if he ever came to the US. We sent each other messages on holidays but again I thought I would never see him again probably.
Then last month there he was!. He was visiting friends in the US not too far away and he came to see me! The whole family was glad to see him again, and since we are older we got to spent some time alone. He said I should come to see him in France where we would have a lot of freedom.
I think he means freedom to have sex which I'm not sure I'm ready for. The French Vietnamese tend to be like the French in general..they expect to have sex even without any idea of marriage or even a long term relationship...and it is not our traditional way.
But it is exciting to think about!
