Opposites Really Do Attract and Can Stay Attracted in the Long Run

I think it’s safe to say that in almost every relationship I’ve been in we were complete opposites. Even though they all fell apart eventually, everything was genuine and I don't regret any of them at all.

In one relationship, he came from a very affluent family, extremely hardheaded and outspoken, and had that who-cares-if-I-die-today mentality. On the other hand, I was from the middle class, cautious about everyday life, and grew up very quiet and reserved. He liked to gulp down ten Mountain Dew Code Red’s and pop wheelies on his dirt bike ‘til 2 AM and woke up from blackouts in a lawn chair on a school day. I was a homebody; I'd rather read or watch indie films and I paid very careful attention to my diet, overall health, and schoolwork.

Despite all of our differences, we still enjoyed each other’s company because we both gave different perspectives on life. He taught me that I needed to be reckless and make mistakes sometimes in order to “feel alive.” I taught him that he needed to take certain things seriously or else he’d be living for nothing at all. He helped me get “out of my shell” while I gave him immense support as he got his life back on track after f*cking up so much. We also got into each other’s hobbies as well (or, at least attempted to. It's the effort that counts).

In short, in order to make an “opposite” relationship to work, both people must be able to try and take interest in their partner’s likes and hobbies while simultaneously give each other their own different takes on life. It helps to genuinely be into whatever they like as well—because, who knows, you could like it too. A relationship like this gives variety and will be far from boring. You can’t deny energy and chemistry, no matter who the person is. If you start to like someone even though they’re different in how they live their life, go for it. They just might change you for the better in ways you never thought was possible.
