Am I In Love? Finally, How to Answer the Age-Old Question

Am I in love?

Many times, I've seen this question asked on this site. I might even be guilty of asking it myself. There's nothing wrong with asking. It's part of the learning process. That's why I'm writing this MyTake: to answer the question that everyone is wondering about.

1. You won't need to ask.

When you're in love, you just know. I can't explain how you know. You just get this feeling that's amazing (yet terrifying) and you can't seem to get rid of it.

2. You've seen their flaws and love them anyway.

A lot of times, people suffering from infatuation stop liking a person when they see them do something less than perfect. But love isn't about perfection, love is about flaws. The moment I knew that I was in love was when I was reflecting on a fight between my friend and I. Sure, he'd been an idiot, but in my heart I knew that I wasn't going to hold onto my anger forever. And plus, I liked that he wasn't perfect. Why? Because I'm not perfect, either.

3. You want the best for them.

A lot of people say this, but are they serious? Wanting the best for someone means letting go. I watched my friend, the guy I love, get on a plane and fly almost 2000 miles away...to be with someone else. It was heartbreaking, but I wanted him to be happy. I wished him the best, and still do. Yeah, I wish that I'd been enough for him, but I guess he found someone better (well, they since broke up but still). In short, you're being selfless.

4. You Still Care

Love doesn't end when you're not together. They still have a piece of your heart, and you know that if they were to call you ten years from now and tell you that they were stuck in the middle of nowhere with a broken down car, you'd go to help. If they came to you crying about a heartbreak, you'd comfort them. Love doesn't just go away like crushes do. Love is permanent. Can you find and love someone else? Absolutely. But that one person will always have a special place in your heart.
