Well you guys have been friends before for 6 years so it wouldn't seem strange at all to stare for 5 sec. and i dont think that she has understood sth.
Are you feared cuz she might have understood sth or you are u afraid that she didn't get it at all? Either way i think that you should tell her how u really feel. Good luck :)
She probably realised something was up when she caught you but she is probably really doubting herself so if you want her to get the message you should do it more often and also smile at the end and look away and if she shows any signs of interest start flirting and later ask her out.
