Would you choose love over religion?

Question

You are in love with this person. 

As in, you love this guy/girl, you want to marry him/her, but s/he won’t, because the both of you are of different faiths. The only way is to convert to his/her religion. Would you?

But what if you don’t believe in the faith of your significant other’s? Would you convert in order to be with the person you love? Or is your faith more important than a potential life partner? After all, if there’s no such thing as The One, surely there would be someone else for you out there?
But are you willing to risk regretting letting go of someone because you are not willing to accept his or her faith?

ps. In reality, most of us would probably choose not to choose, but just put yourself in that spot for the moment… can you see yourself doing one or the other?

Thankfully, my husband and I believe in the same things for the most part, I look into other religions to just explore my options, but I also go back to being agnostic because nothing else is close to my personal beliefs.

Though, if we weren't, I couldn't force myself to be another religion, you either believe in something or you don't. That's final. You cannot force faith. But I believe people of different religions can love each other and practice their own faiths and still have a wonderful marriage.

If my husband was of any religion I would tell him I'll explore his religion, I'll read on it, and have him teach me all about it, if I liked it and thought it for my personal beliefs, I would convert, but if I thought it wasn't for me, I would be honest and tell him, and tell him I don't think there's any need to choose between me and his faith, he can have both and I won't disrupt his faith or try and change him.

If I do convert, I wouldn:t be religious at all and would refuse to do religious things with them. And I'd probably resent them a little bit for asking me to compromise yet he himself won't budge. It's not fair. And I'd probably resent myself for giving in and being weak.

If I do convert, I'd make sure he knows that I'm doing him a huge favor and I still would never agree to do any religious stufd. My conversion would only be for practical purposes. Anyone who FORCES other people to do something is not worth it.

If he doesn't respect my beliefs, why should I respect his?

I am non-religious, so I guess this doesn't really apply to me. I would be absolutely willing to accept the religion of the person I would wanna marry. Taking part in religious tradition like going to mass on Sundays would not be a problem either. However, I can't force myself to believe in something, nor am I going to pretend to have faith in it. If my boyfriend isn't willing to accept the fact that I'm agnostic, it's just as disrespectful as me not accepting his. I couldn't be with someone who doesn't allow me to believe in what I wanna believe.

It's easier for me because I believe in all religions. I think all religions are just different forms of worshiping the same deity. Starting from the Christian Bible, when God halted the building of the Tower of Babel and made the workers speak different languages so they couldn't communicate, the different religions came about. Most religions have the same basic principles with a variation on the details. That is just my circumstance due to my belief.

In short, I would can change my religion if the love is strong enough because I don't have one set religion.

Depends on the religion. Even then, I don't think that I would change. Why should I change for that person? If she is not intelligent enough to view basic human biology above her "traditional" beliefs then I guess, she'll have to leave. Religion obsessed freaks were never my type anyways.

If I were okay with the fact that their religion mattered more to them than me, then yes, I would convert.

If I were NOT okay with the fact that their religion would always come first, then I would not. I'd end the relationship and go looking elsewhere.

I think this would be stupid.

If ones religion is so meaningless to them that given they have to make a choice, they'll stop believing whey they need to like an off switch. It ponders me why they claimed to be religious in the first place beyond seeming like a headless chicken.

No, I wouldn't lose my belief, I'm Christian partly because it is the most intellects grounded worldview that provides a basis for ethics, reason and logic that no other belief follows

I would not convert.. we can agree to believe in different things and that's fine.

I find religion to be very silly in general, although I have my own beliefs. There's several billion other people to chose from, I'm sure love can be found elsewhere without having to change who I am

If there is no religious benefit for me then there is no interest. I don't care if he is rich - money is good - but you can't take it with you after you die and it's not worth the sacrifices I would have to make by being with somebody who doesn't share my religious beliefs.

It depends on certain things;
how much you care about your faith (if at all)
how their faith affects you: I mean women can be pretty mistreated in some religions
if you have to think about it it probably isn't real love so it probably isn't worth it.

I choose my beliefs over anything else. If the problem is that anybody (be it someone I have feelings for or has a gun to my head or anyone) wants me to leave my religion then that's too bad for that person. You see there's a difference between compromise in a situation and compromising myself in a situation.

Well, being raised as a Christian, and thinking the way that I do, and how the world is today, I can honestly say... Screw religion. There isn't a damn thing that some dude in the clouds, who supposedly can do all these awesome things to help others, but just outright refuses to, and decides to do something else to make their lives miserable, can say or do to me to persuade me to reconsider someone I love.

I would only if i'm convinced the guy is worth it. Coz sometimes we end up falling in love with the wrong guy, and we won't realize it until its too late. But in principle, yes, Love is bigger than Religion.
