How to stop wasting time on a girl with a boyfriend?

Yeah, it's the classic case where a girl has a boyfriend, she's my friend, yet I'm finding myself liking her. Problem was that I was interested in her before I knew she had a boyfriend. She's been with him for a long, long time. Even MORE problematic is that she's basically the one girl who's ever given me the most attention in my life. Granted, her flirty, attentive demeanor is just how she is with everyone, so it's not like she's being "special" toward me.

The problem is that I have had so many problems with unrequited love, so many problems that I just got angry with the fact that she considered me a close friend, so I insulted her, because I knew that it would never get me anywhere in the long run. Yeah, I'm an idiot. It was new territory for a girl to actually like me, even as a proper friend, that it felt weird and different. But it doesn't change the fact that I really need to get her off my mind because it's not healthy to waste energy on this.

I know SO MUCH how you feel it's ridiculous.
Last year I was on an all-time low over a guy with a girlfriend. I destroyed myself that year. Learned a lot though. And I'm over it now. And we're still good buddies. Here's how it happened, and I'm pretty sure the only way it can happen.
One of two ways (or both):
You stop seeing her, or drastically reduce the amount of time in which you see her. Which is impossible if you're good friends. Or impossible if you two are just always in the same places. Anyway, you get it. Thing is, distancing can help get your mind off her, keep you busy with other things, help you meet other people... but still, you might have the nagging, "I miss her", in your head, so it doesn't work. So your only choice it seems...
Is to find someone else who interests you.
This is what worked for me. Get out there and meet as many cute girls as you possibly can. Find any way to meet new people. And you will eventually find someone who catches your attention and gets your mind off this girl. Might still take a BIT of time, but you're bound to get over her. At least for a little while.

I see your problem, but I find you are much too rational about your feelings. I do think you need to see that as you say you have a history of unrequited love, you are a sweet and sensible guy, but with little response, could become a "bad circle". If you feel unrequited from earlier, you might feel "starved" of love. But this is a part when you have to be more strong and less rational. Don't dig yourself a ditch and mope around about her. She obviously has a boyfriend, and yes, it was stupid to insult her, but how bad was it really?! Most people are forgiving if it's a smaller thing. But if not you can only say you're sorry and hope that she will forgive you even if you maybe couldn't. You must accept that she has a boyfriend, but she is still valuable to you as a friend, and you could learn from her, as you said basically that she's the only female friend you ever had become close to, right? So do try not to be too hard on yourself, and see that you are in fact a sweet loving guy, and work on your daily life, do fun stuff even though you might not feel to, see your other friends, make new ones! Hope things work out for you!

You are correct. I have been there before, GET OUT! even if she breaks up, it will take months and months to get over her ex. You just have to try and break away from her and not pay attention to her. If she does like you, she'll come after you and that's when you know you may have a chance down the line.
