Basically, jealousy in general is about possession, insecurity, (lack of) control, greed, and paranoia. If a guy gets jealous it's not a display of "love" or "caring", it's territoriality. If a guy is insecure, he's gonna be jealous. If he's secure, and confident, less likely. Still, if a guy is jealous, the kinds of things that set him off could really be anything, and jealousy if left unchecked can prove to only get worse.
If your guy starts getting jealous on you, just tell him to chill and explain that you're with him, and that's all that matters. That you're not gonna cheat so he should just calm down and realize that nothing is going on. If he does it again, tell him to back off, and reign it in or the relationship will NEVER work. If he still can't get with it, just end it. This should be standard procedure. Three strikes. Jealousy doesn't tend to get better, anyway, but three strikes are at least giving them a chance.
Sorry if I didn't give much specifics, but the causes are listed here, and as for what sets it off, is pretty hard to list, as jealousy in itself is fairly irrational behavior . Sorry I wasn't more specific.

I'm harder to irritate than that, ha. I don't get jealous easily, I trust whoever I'm dating... I mightn't trust other guys around a girlfriend but ah well. I'd be more likely to get jealous if I liked a girl and some other guy seemed to be interesting her more... having said that I actually sometimes enjoy the challenge.

I get jealous when someone else has something I want, but can't have.
Like when I see the girl I like with another guy.
