Why I Dislike the Concept of Religion and God

Why I dislike the concept of Religion and God.

Full Disclosure:

There was a poll. My reply to somone's comment did not fit. I was frothing so I need a mytake to truly cover it. Of course, there are things I may have forgotten to cover.

I don't claim to be right (hell no! not my place!)

I just want you to think.

Here's the original question:

My Reasons:

1. There's no solid evidence, just a book that's been passed around for yonks. People believed in witchery, the world being flat, the earth being the center of the universe. And that was clearly wrong. So what's the chances of this book being spot on? And we've all heard of chinese whispers.

Only when people got their head out of their arses did any progress begin. Which brings me to my next point.

2. Religion, or at least the ones I grew up with, have been the biggest inhibitor to progress. It has basically killed off a lot of good people, or prevented them from doing anything. That great thing called fear...people were scared of thinking outside the box. That's why there has not been as many scientific breakthroughs in the middle ages. There definitely was a lot of potential. And if someone back then had some sort of medicine for something, they would be/could be trialled for witchery.

And when people started to doubt, science finally could progress.

3. I've mentioned witchery a few times. It's pretty sad. Witchery, and other similar reasons used back in the day were basically an excuse to push their religious agenda. Pagans not converting? Kill them or try harder. Once that was achieved, their own religion had no competition and they could exercise some degree of control over the masses.

Once someone is fearful (or at least conscious) of their actions, and have a superior being to appease, they are practically predictable. So-and-so will not kill, that's a crime that'll send him to hell. He won't lie, or steal, or...what have you.

And quite frankly, a predictable man is a controlled man. Speaking of control...

4. The concept of heaven, or a better place than this, gets me frothy. Earth is crap. But it's the best place you'll ever get. It is sad, knowing so many people sacrificed all their potential enjoyment for an afterlife that has a fair chance of not existing. A lifetime, sometimes. All this devotion...I like to see with my very eyes to believe something.

5. People in the past have abused religion. By hiding behind it. You know...pedophiles. And it doesn't stop there. Some religious figures have grabbed the money of peasants trying to appease the church (people scraping through life on the bones of their asses, mind you) and run.

6. The Christian Religion has suppressed the expression of people's deepest desires. All lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification. Why should we deny ourselves that? YOLO.

The seven "deadly" sins:
GREED: There is nothing wrong with being greedy. You just want more than you have currently. Envy just means you want whatever so-and-so has. And really, there's nothing wrong with that. It's motivation, and builds ambition. It gets you off the couch. Without it, not much is going to be done.

Sloth and gluttony: you are lazy and eat too much. Well, DING DONG, a bit of self pride is going to get you off the couch and back into shape (and hopefully you'll eat half of that chip packet, instead of the lot in one sitting). Nothing wrong with that. Everyone goes home happy.

Lust: humans would have died out without it. Just sayin'.

Wrath: if you hate so-and-so, you goddamn hate them for a bloody good reason! Making yourself love them is gonna hurt! No gratification there. If you love your enemy or deny your hate of them, you're technically at their mercy. They can just screw you over....and over. That's what any old Joe Blow is gonna do in this day and age. If they can get away with it...

7. The god most are familiar with is a hypocrite. He can do all the things he forbids us lowly humans to do: kill/cause the deaths of people, enslave people and wreak havoc on his 'children'. And people make up an excuse for that: it's His Will. What a shit reason for the starving kids in Africa. For the children with terminal cancer, the good people who suddenly kick the bucket after being hit by a car or hit by an...aeroplane (stranger things have happened).

Words fail me in my plight to explain my dislike of religion.

Why can't people just fathom the idea of them being it?

That there's no greater miracle than their very existence?

That all they have to thank at the end of the day is themselves?

That some things just are. That there is no way to explain some things. We're just here....the universe, consciousness...it just exists. Accept it and move on, yeah?

I believe in living my life. I believe in self-gratification, as long as it is not at the expense of others.

I'm not going to live in apprehension, or fear. I'm not going to please anyone, no diety for me. All I need to please is myself.

In the end of the day, we're the ones living our individual lives. No one can live it for us. We're all dying alone. And then, I really hope there is nothing. Sucks to have to wake up and do it over again.

Just my two cents
