The Truth about Sex and Violence in Video Games

You know why I'm posting this article. Selling violent video games to minors being a criminal offence, several games banned is several countries, frustrated parents who are afraid about their children, grandparents complaining that the parks are empty etc etc.

The Truth about Sex and Violence in Video Games

All of the above make it clear that many people are full of fear, ignorance and hate for video games.

Although video games have become a mainstream entertainment for young people, the majority of adult people look at video games as something made for kids only.

People think that books, movies, comics and music, are good enough to spread a message or simply to tell an entertaining story, but for some reason video games are perceived as the cute gift for five year old nephew.

And that exactly is why frustrated, worried mothers are freaking out when they see violence and sex in video games. But I got exciting news for you, worried mother:

VIOLENCE IN VIDEO GAMES IS NOT REAL!!!

If you think that your kid is unable to distinguish virtual violence from real violence then you underestimate and insult it's intelligence.

And if you think that virtual violence leads to real violence then go to ban plastic swords and water pistols for kids. Also, don't forget to forbid any contact with violent images like illustrations of Medieval torturing methods in the history books of your kid:

And this here as well:

The Truth about Sex and Violence in Video Games

It pisses me even more off when worried mothers talk about sex in video games.

Probably the most notable example is in MASS EFFECT. A succesful game with a mature story and all hell broke lose in the Western World, especially in America because the game includes a super explicit, hot, space, sex scene.

ATTENTION PLEASE! ALL MINORS ARE REQUESTED TO SCROLL DOWN AND SKIP THE FOLLOWING VIDEO!

Some of you are laughing now, but back in 2008 it was more than enough to tarnish the game and label it as "AO" (Adults Only). At the same time we have TV shows and movies like Game of Thrones and Fifty Shades of Grey with graphic violence and nudity allowed for teenagers as young as 16.

Yes, I know, most of the "nude" content in video games looks a bit immature and cute, which makes you think that the content is aimed at teenagers. But usually this content is nothing more than sexy Elves with huge boobs, sexy schoolgirls with huge boobs or sexy soldiers with huge boobs.

If you think that this is dangerous for young people, then you should recognise the same danger in other things, like in ice cream advertisements for example.

That's right. The above images are real, ice cream advertisements.

This is obviously unfair. The rest of the media are allowed to use sex and violence with different levels of maturity.

Get this through your heads, worried mothers! Just as there are comics, books, movies, cartoons for adult people, there are video games for adult people as well.

Some people talk about art and culture when it comes to abominations like Lars von Trier movies, but when they see a fatality in Mortal Kombat they are shocked and disgusted. Give me a break!

This is all happening because video games are the newest form of entertainment. During the first half of the 20th century, we had censorship in films as the cinema was the newest form of entertainment.

And of course the censorship was much more strict than it was in books or theatrical plays.

I remember two years ago when I met a German WW2 veteran who fought in the battle of Berlin in 1945. He was 17 years old at that year. Just weeks before the battle and being a soldier for more than 2 years already, he had the chance to visit the cinema of a nearby town. The film playing included a rape scene. Now don't imagine an actual rape scene. It was merely a man pulling a woman off-screen and then cut. That's all. Yet they forbid him enter and watch it until an older officer came to intervene. So he was old enough to serve, fight, kill and be killed, but not old enough to watch a movie. WTF?!

And what was the excuse for all of this? That the moving picture is more interactive and closer to human emotions, which means that the law must address it in a careful way.

We heard the same bullshit from old people when the first First Person Shooters were released back in the 90's. You commit the murders in First Person so this is making the game different than the rest of them and of course it encourages kids to use violence.

The games Wolfenstein and DOOM were relased in the early 90's. It's been 20 years since then. WHERE THE HELL ARE ALL THE MURDERERS? Let me guess: In America, as usual.

Wrong! All statistics show that since the 90's, school violence in America has decreased.

The Truth about Sex and Violence in Video Games

As if prisons have been built for gamers. When my grandpa was slaughtering communists with the bayonet in Russia, he first had to play a round of Call of Duty and choose Axis to get into the right mood.

And to all those who say that video games make you anti-social, you probably never made friends through video games. There are many people, including myself, who met new people not only in the school yard but also in front of a PS console.

The Truth about Sex and Violence in Video Games

More and more students replace movies with video games when they all sit together in a living room.

Why not? Games slowly become better in storytelling. In some genres they have already become the best. Ask a gamer, when was he more afraid. When he watched The Excorcist or when he played Silent Hill and Resident Evil?

Video games also contribute to education. I began learning about the Roman Empire and Napoleon Bonaparte by playing Rome and Napoleon Total War.

Film productions draw the attention with movies like 300, Downfall, The Last Samurai and convince young people to search on Wikipedia the true stories about those events. Same thing is happening with games like the Total War series, Assasins Creed or God of War.

It appears that the justification of video games will come once the older generations have died out.

The same thing happened with comics and movies. Today both are recognised as an excellent form of entertainmen for all ages. People, especially children, do not play video games because they got brainwashed or deceived. They play video games becaue it is MUCH MORE FUN TO PLAY DAMN VIDEO GAMES!

  • As a nerd and being an almost 30 yr old who still plays call of duty, loves me some Dead Islans, who still will bust out the 007 and slay my husband on a 64, who grew up on Doom and Duke Nukem, who rode a skateboard around with a backpack containing an xbox so that we could all hook it up and play at whatever house we all landed at... as someone who grew up around multiple guns and had a home filled with even more boxes of ammo and never shot anyone... I support this take.

It's rather ridiculous to blame games, but it's a whole lot easier for lazy parents to point their finger at someone else and say "hey, you're the reason my kid turned out this way" because God forbid anyone take responsibility these days. As a parent it's your responsibility to pay attention to what your kids are into. That means music, books, movies, tv shows, and video games. It's your job to filter out the crap and keep it age appropriate.

  • The mind of a child is very easily influenced by the things they see and feel. The mind is malleable at this stage in life, and can be conditioned to do virtually anything.

If a child grows up in a violent household, that child is more likely to become violent in adulthood because they view their violent home life as normal behavior. You can easily see the contrast when you look at kids from strong family ties vs those with bad family ties in the ghettos. Of course there are exceptions, since each person is different, but by in large, this trend is seen on a population-wide basis.

There are more extreme examples in the world. I've seen videos where ISIS trains a 3 year old boy to cut off the head of an adult, or shoot one in the head. You can be certain that child will be desensitized to violence and murder by adulthood. Their experiences in childhood, will influence their future decisions.

In video games, there are many questionable shoot-em-ups where you take on the persona of a murderer, rapist, sadist... etc. You say that kids can distinguish video game violence from real-life violence. I totally agree that a child can tell you whether a real person is being raped or a video game character. But young children cannot comprehend the full consequences of their actions. This is why children make decisions that most adults would never make. Not comprehending the full consequences is why kids bring knives and guns to school, which could land them a criminal record that impacts their lives for life. This is why kids sometimes perform wrestling moves from TV on their friends and end up breaking their neck or killing them. While this is not to say all adults make good decisions, the decisions are more thought out than a child's.

When an R-rated video game plants the idea of raping a woman with a baseball bat into a 10 year old kid, you can be certain that the idea does not extinguish the moment the game is turned off. I'd be willing to wager that when kids who play these games get into arguments with others, they often go home and re-enact violent video game scenes in their head with their antagonizer as the target.

  • dear parents,

if your kid can't discern between fantasy and reality, s/he's probably well below the target audience for the game AND SHOULD NOT BE PLAYING IT, YOU PIECES OF SHIT.

    also ea=antichrist

    s2.quickmeme.com/.../...ca0428636a88fdf8470a69.jpg

  • EA = Electronic Anti-christ <- this is kinda true tho. LMFAO.

My first counter that I automatically go to when people start the video game violence leads to real violence is pretty much "parent your kid better" and "I'm sorry your kid wasn't born with more common sense".

  • To be fair, Media Watchdogs tend to have problem with sex in violence in any kind of media and not only in video games, so it's kinda pointless to try and justify in sex in violence in video games by sex in violence in TV, in that case. Creative Assembly, the developers of both historical and fantasy Total War Games, already find an way around the censorship, as it's seems that it's totally okey to show violence, as long as you don't show blood. So the main game of Total War: Warhammer got the Pegi 16 Rating, while the paid DLC that adds blood to the game is an Mature Rating. As for if violence in video games makes people more violent in real life, some Media Watchdogs claims so, for it's looks like for the most part the opposite is true, the violence in video games serve as an alternative to violence in real life, especially for the violence for fun type ( and not violence for an just cause), that's why we see that people in fact did less violent things in real life, after the years in which video games come out. So in general I believe that violent video game are totally okey, as for in which year kids should be exposed to that, I am not sure, but I believe that it's better to be exposed to violence in a video game first, as when someone get killed in real life, there is no way to restart the game, as far as I know, so it's much less bad to make an fighting mistakes in a video game then in a real life. Also the part in the Fox News Mass Effect Debate when the women show say that a kid can play the games for adults of his father, when his father not at home, is almost the same as saying that a kid can watch the porn films that his father have when his father not at home. If the father really care about his son not seeing something, he can always hide it/lock it, by maybe the father don't really care in the first place, and it's mainly the mothers who overreacting, which is typical for women. Also I liked how the game expert had countered the bullshit of the funny radfem. Also they like to ignore the fact that in many violent video games, the players can play as the good guys, and it's not like they are killing For the Evulz, and even when the player is able to play as the villain in a video game, he usually know that he is playing as the villain, and not as a good guy.

  • This is stupid, the only people who get upset about the nature of video games obviously haven't played a lot of games. Also.. anyone who actually takes the violence seriously is really dumb. It's a game, not life.

    • And yet in Germany they constantly talk about how video games lead to violence and killing and ban video games completely from the market. Even online markets. The only way to get them is to hop into the car, drive to one of the neighbouring countries (preferably Czech Republic or Poland), buy the game and then smuggle it back into Germany.

    • Glad I live in the United States.

    • where do you get them from? Let me guess, Mexico.

  • I just think it's kind of funny, because I feel like this is mostly in america. I mean, you get bleeped fpr swearing on tv, talking about sex on tv, etcetera. You're such prudes, lol.

I totally agree though. What i've seen, the parents are ridiculous.

    • Believe in some cases it is worse than America. In Germany there are games that have been banned completely from the market. You can't even order them online from abroad. The only way to get them is to hop into the car, drive to one of the neighbouring countries (preferably Czech Republic or Poland), buy the game and then smuggle it back into Germany.

    • Kinda what we do with fireworks

  • Video games didn't do anything to me, they didn't discourage me from reading, and still don'tt. They are fun, entertaining and a way to experience something you never could. Not that it's real at all, and that's the point. It's not meant to be taken seriously.

Also my blond female Sheppard just did liars before taking on the illusive man's base lol, and now I'm going through that door that they rocketed that fighter through lol. The new game is coming out in less than 3 months now. I can't wait.

  • I'll give you the quick way to solve such dilemmas.

If something is being protested with religious slogans and with 'Jesus Christ', than it is probably caused by some idiotic reaction.

Today's children are overprotected, and many would agree that they don't turn out to be nice when they're closed to some boundaries.

When I was 6, I sometimes opened television at 2 o'clock at night and watched Krista Allen movies. Didn't turn up a sexomaniac or something.

Kids are not that stupid, but if you act as if they are, they'll surely become idiots.

  • Burned >:D Nice one! Good stuff!

    • Thanks for appreciating.

    • Don't worry! Stupid people exist aplenty! Just make sure, that you ignore and avoid them.

  • Parents shouldn't buy m rated games and then cry when they see something that's inappropriate.

  • A bigger concern should be parents who are absent in their children’s lives. Kids today are being raised by strangers (nanny, childcare, babysitter, television etc). Kids shouldn't be allowed to play video games for hours and fed TV dinners washed down with a bucket of coca cola.

  • maybe when violent video games first came out they affected the youth more. but now since everyone plays these games, and the media already shows war scenes and destruction, it really doesn't affect them today as much as it did back in the old days. and remember people were more conservative back then unlike today :)

    • 'Kids can handle the violence on television, if they can handle the violence at home' - George Carlin

    • naaah, thats not entirely true im playing violent video games since i was 7 years old, it never effected me in a negative way

  • I love this take and I love video games. If only these people didn't force me to pay $70 for Dead or Alive Extreme 3. I had to import it, but it was totally worth it.

  • I already wrote that if a person's kids play violent video games its the parents fault as well.
I'd HATE to live in Germany or Australia due to my love of gaming\
    www.girlsaskguys.com/.../a34251-it-s-not-the-fault-of-the-game-company-that-your-son-is-playing

  • I like how at gamestop they clarify this when someone buys the game for the kids and Walmart requires Id but people buy them for the kid anyway then complain when this comes up. I like even more how it's OK on TV but not for games.
No one can make excuses either because it doesn't even take a damn minute to set parental locks on console content

  • no offense, but people who think video games are violent and promote violence are really stupid. im playing video games since i was 7 years old. and it didn't effect me in a negative way ever

  • #1stWorldProblems

  • People should be more concerned about children growing up without a father instead of their kids playing videogames. Children raised without a father causes more criminality than videogames ever will.
