I'm probably overanalyzing it but I feel like it's an unhealthy repressed response to growing up in an overly-puritanical society in which natural healthy human sexuality is suppressed, people are unnaturally desexualized and made to consider sex as a "bad thing" - so need to introduce this element of submission in order to resolve the cognitive dissonance (i. e. compartmentalize their non-sexual "selves" from their everyday "selves" - it's a failure to integrate the two). It's a 'white thang' i. e. it is only popular in Victorian-descendant cultures, because people of other cultures just enjoy their sexuality in a more natural, guilt-free healthy way in which we were intended to enjoy our sexuality... I feel like if you're enjoying sex in the fully primal, animalistic, intimate way it was meant to be enjoyed, then one wouldn't feel a need to do this sort of psychologically disengaging and compartmentalizing.
