Why is female masturbation looked down upon?

I mean everyone knows that most guys wank but female masturbation is never mentioned nor referenced and it seems to be a lot more taboo. It appears to me from my experience, it is a lot more looked down upon and most girls keep it secret that they do it. But why is this? Why is female masturbation looked down upon and more taboo than mens?

  • It is because there is a double standard when it comes to sex. I do not believe in the the double standard. Women are people to and have sex drives to. Many women have sex drives as high as the men with high sex drives. This makes them horny and turned on. If women need to masturbate they should not hesitate to. There is nothing wrong in the slighest with women pleasuring themsevels and I am not the kind of person that will make a woman feel there is anything wrong with it. My view is if a woman is horny she should pleasure herself for shure. Nothing wrong with it. :)

  • Because religion is a joke, and I'll never know how the overzealous catholics managed to reproduce over time. Basically people are taught to be prudish, that's all. I've even read articles on "it's so odd that we think it's perfectly okay that we discuss only male masturbation as normal, and we don't even think about the female version".

No one looks down upon it though, or if they do then you can just say "yeah well I am guessing you don't care about health and would circumcise your kids because you disregard their health too" and never speak to them again.

  • Because guys are frail If you wanna ruin a guys life just comment badly on his sex preformace or penis size. They feel that really badly.

But I can say the same for us girls girls who have outie vaginas feel lesser to girls with innies. I personally have an outie and I lover her.

But for your question is fuck it! If a guy feels insecure just because you use your fingers or a dildo or whatever I recomend you buy a hitachi magic wand and just fucking put it on you clit and live a little. A guy who is with you will have to get over his penis insecurity

  • Society and gender roles have taugh girls that we can't be sexual beings or we're a slut. That's why when guys stare at boobs I don't really give an excuse, like girls have instincts to want to reproduce too but yet we don't gawk. It's just one of those things that the world does to keep women down and it's very sad. Also girls are the main ones who look down on girls having sex. Honestly girls have stupid rules like:
Be pretty but not too pretty or other girls will hate.
It's really stupid but it's how women create social platforms

  • In all honesty from what I may concur, knowing the delicate nature of most men's sexual pride, it may be perceived as a threat. If she can do it better it might make his performance seem all the less effective.

  • Probably due to longstanding traditional and religious values that involve women keeping pure and innocent. Men have always been seen as more sexual creatures and their sexual endeavors are easily and readily accepted and not scrutinized. People often mention the double standard where men are praised for sleeping around, yet women are scorned for similar behavior. So I suppose by extension female masturbation falls into all of this the same way as her actual sexual activity.

  • I think that it's because women are still expected in this society to be 'pure' and feminine. I can't explain why exactly, because it's just silly that it's considered taboo. Even women themselves look down on other women who masturbate. And also since most females deny that they do that, even if they do, less and less women are willing to admit it.

  • I haven't seen where this has been looked down upon, in fact probably just the opposite. It is commonplace for groups of women friends and co workers to host and attend these classy sex toy parties. Women don't seem to have any problem about talking about this subject in mixed company either. Just these two facts would make me think that it is no longer much of a taboo in todays world.

  • I think because of many women presenting a good girl image, they try and present that women don't do it. Also women are more discrete about it. Men just put it out there.
Women do, the sex toy industry for them is huge, for example.
I see nothing wrong with it, in fact it is the most arousing and erotic thing to me to think of and see.

  • If women were more open about their masturbation then this wouldn't be an issue. Men don't look down on females rubbin one out. Not any men I know at least.

  • It may have been suppressed earlier, but it is becoming more mainstream.
Almost everyone masturbates, and it is hard to keep it under wraps.
Many girls here on GAG talk about it, that they do it, and how.
I encourage female masturbation, if I am not around to take care of business...

  • I don't think it's taboo at all. I think it's not discussed as much because women mostly don't HAVE to masturbate. ANY girl can get laid whenever she wants.

But assuming you're correct, that's no different from it being taboo for men to use sex toys, but for women they're "empowered" if they use vibrators and dildos.

    • I agree and disagree. I think that there is a stigma for both men and women who own sex toys, but it's definitely more so for men, especially if they are going to use it on themselves. Masturbation in general is often considered to be taboo, but I do think that men talk about it more, so that makes it more acceptable. I disagree with your opinion of women being able to get laid whenever she wants, though. It can be hard for some women to find someone who isn't a creep, or someone who they are attracted to

    • Aaah, you're changing what I said to argue with me. You can't do that. I said that ANY woman can get laid ANY time she wants. I didn't say any woman could find a super hot guy who is the man of her dreams any time she wants. I'm talking about the pure 'scratch the itch' of getting laid. Big difference.

  • It's highly rare for a female to admit she masturbates
years have changed as well as times have changed
it shouldn't be looked upon as something taboo,
disgusting , evil all females have urges just like men
i think females should feel free to be their self many
females are embarrass and afraid to admit they
masturbate but they should be free to be open
they are equal as much as men are

  • I think it's just that some women won't discuss the subject as openly as men, and it's not looked down upon, it's healthy to masturbate.

  • Are you kidding? The only thing that's taboo nowadays is telling girls they shouldn't sleep around with a bunch of random dudes who don't care about them. That's slut-shaming, and wrong. We men need to quit oppressing women and let them be whores and run around topless all day. Us men are such pigs for trying to force our morals on you poor, innocent women. Everyone knows there are no negative consequences to living a promiscuous lifestyle, whatsoever... Oh wait...

  • Why do you think it is looked down on. I think it is great. My partner tells me when she has rubbed one out in the shower.

  • i think of it quite te opposite way. if a girl masturbates and uses toys, boys find it hot and those girls are generaly seen as more sexually open mindet.
in contrast, if a guy masturbates its "normal" but, he considered a loser, who can´t find a girl and if he uses toys, he is a despicable creep.

  • Our culture fears female sexual enjoyment, as though only bad women enjoy sexuality. Good women do it only to please their husbands.

My perspective is one of "good girls masturbate/bad girls fornicate," but it come from the perspective of a guy who is not interested in sex without love and not out of a need to slut shame. I don't tell women friends they are wrong for engaging in sexual activity outside of marriage or even outside of serious relationships.

  • masturbation is a private issue.

will you accept me as a friend?

    • Sure, message me first though :)

  • I don't understand this too

  • Answering your question, I think it's the act of masturbating that is frowned upon as opposed to just females masturbating specifically.

I see pretty much no reason for females doing it to be frowned upon more than males. This makes absolutely no sense. If anything, surely it'll help us guys know what our girls like and don't like in bed.

  • Can you provide some evidence to back up your assertion that female masturbation is frowned upon. I have never seen that at all.

  • Its not taboo to guys all guys know females do it its just females themselves look down upon it and guys accept it as a function of life so they talk about it. My sister told me 50 percent of her friends admit to masterbating and 100 percent of her friends that claim they don't are lieing.

  • it's not looked down upon to me. i know girls do it they're just not as vocal about it as guys.

  • Nobody looks down upon female masturbation. And if there are they are women
