I think he may have a problem allowing himself to see a woman as a sex object. Especially when it is a woman he cares about. During rough sex, you need to be able to see your partner as a sex object in that moment. The best I could suggest is to just try to find a compromise and slowly introduce different things like spankings and slowly work your way up as he gets comfortable.
