If the clitoris is just a vestigial penis, what's the big fuss about female circumcision?

In case you don't know, female circumcision is the removal of a woman's clitoris. Now here I'm just quoting: "Why does female orgasm occur at all? By contrast, attempts to treat female orgasm difficulty by using anti-anxiety drugs to counter the supposed inhibitions deriving from upbringing and religion have repeatedly failed (Wilson, 1988)." The big issue is when claiming that cutting off the clitoris is like cutting off the tip of the penis, but it really isn't. The only equivalent is cutting off a man's nipples.

Why do women who are circumcised claim that it makes them feel "pure and feminine"? It's because they instinctively know that a clitoris is just a piece of male residue, same way a whale's legs are useless leftovers from its past as a land dweller, removing a whale's legs will make it pure.

  • Vestigial means having become functionless during the course of evolution. For humans to evolve we needed both sexes to continue existing, so the female has been around as long as the male human. So the organ, as a clitoris and not a penis, has existed as long as women. So not vestigial. As to purpose or functions, the clitoris is the main source of female stimulation. Inside, the clitoris extends back around the vagina and is stimulated that way during intercourse, as well as by rubbing with pubic bone or fingers on its head.

  • Female circumcision isn't the removal of the clitoris, it's the sewing closed of the vaginal opening. They leave a little hole big enough to menstruate through so the blood can leave. How would you like it if the sewed your penis to your perineum so you couldn't pop a boner till you're married? A woman should not be mutilated that way!

  • I don't buy the argument that the clitoris is nothing but a vestigial penis. It is the embryological analog of the penis, that is true. But that doesn't make it vestigial. The default human being is female. What that means is that it's only the influence of the Y chromosome that changes an otherwise female embryo into one that will be male. That effect of the Y chromosome (the default being XX) means that more things can go wrong in embryological development for males. That is why there are more congenital defects in males than females. Labeling the clitoris "vestigial" diminishes the amazing fact that it is the only organ in the human body whose sole function is sexual pleasure. Granted, there are a lot of people who aren't comfortable with that fact (Muslims who amputate the clitoris, for example) but it is a fact nonetheless.

    Almost everything in this question has nothing to do with the topic in question, clitorectomies. Much of it is opinion. A significant portion -- namely, the Update -- is simply false. Flatly stating it as fact does not make it fact.

    The Asker gets biology wrong and bases his theory on incorrect assumptions. Furthermore, I object to the characterization of clitoral removal as female "circumcision." The word itself means "cutting around," which aptly describes removal of the foreskin and has measurable benefits for avoiding certain health problems. Removing a woman's clitoris has no health benefits and cannot be characterized as analogous to anything on a man's body, since male and female genitalia have separate, distinct functions.

    Many types of female circumcision simply consist of making ritual scars on the labia. These harmless procedures are lumped in with extremely devastating ones, like clitoral removal, under the name of female genital "mutilation".

    In reality, the mildest forms of FGM are actually objectively much less obtrusive and with much less potential for complication than Male circumcision.
