They're talking about loosing their virginity and sex shortly afterwards, and yes, it is often a painful process, it's thrusting inside something that's not used to having things thrust inside... The process is natural and unavoidable. It's basically the same process as giving birth (having everything down there stretched until it is the 'perfect fit'). Still, some of us are more skilled than others at understanding the process and not rushing things. It's just in-experience so don't let it put you off sex at all, it is just natural pain while your body adjusts to it's new role.
I am not going to answer for girls, but i will tell you in my experience it can be doing lovingly and gently. And if you are with the right guy he is going to be sensitive to your needs.
