Why do people (usually girls) get so offended when someone refers to female genitalia as a vagina?

Yes the vagina is TECHNICALLY the fleshy entrance/exit to your uterus. I just find it increasingly annoying when I see people get bitterly offended when someone refers to the collective genitalia as a vagina. It's no different than someone calling male genitalia a penis. In all technicality you should refer to the specific parts of it such as the glans, the scrotum, etc yet all you ever hear is penis and testicles. You will never hear someone talk about how they kicked a guy in the scrotum. Long story short, STOP GETTING SO DAMN OFFENDED. Calling the whole area a "vagina" is much easier than specifying inner labia, clitoris, etc. For example if you are talking about "shaving a vagina." OBVIOUSLY you aren't talking about the canal, you are just talking about that region. The only time it should matter is if you are trying to be very very specific.

  • I have yet to get offended, though I often wonder why they do it. And I will mention the difference but hardly am I offended. What is offensive about ignorance?

Speaking about ignorance, the penis is the shaft, the foreskin, the glans, etc. All that protrudes beyond the body above the testicles is the penis.

The male genitalia consists of the penis and the testicles, which are contained within the scrotum so often referring to the testicles includes the skin covering them, the scrotum. So the male genitalia does consist of the penis and testicles. Pretty good reason that is what you hear about when male genitalia is mentioned.

" In all technicality you should refer to the specific parts of it such as the glans, the scrotum, etc" If you are talking of the penis, it does not include the scrotum, but it does refer to the shaft, the foreskin, the glans, technically or not technically. That is what it is. Period. Why would you expect a girl to say he is taking the glans, the foreskin, and the shaft in her mouth? All of that IS the penis.

And you will never hear about somebody being kicked in the scrotum because the scrotum would not hurt. But the testicles do. That is why the reference to kicking them in the testicles (commonly called balls).

"Calling the whole area a "vagina" is much easier than specifying inner labia, clitoris, etc." So is calling that area the vulva. What is the difference? the vulva is the correct name for that area, while vagina refers to the birth canal. using your examples, I expect that you would expect the biggest pain a guy could get is being kicked in the penis.

"Long story short", what is so hard about saying vulva when that is what you are referring to, and why use the wrong term since you know it is the wrong term.

Like I said, I am not offended by ignorance. And thank you for referring me to this question.

  • Maude Lebowski: Does the female form make you uncomfortable, Mr. Lebowski?
The Dude: Uh, is that what this is a picture of?
Maude Lebowski: In a sense, yes. My art has been commended as being strongly vaginal which bothers some men. The word itself makes some men uncomfortable. Vagina.
    The Dude: Oh yeah?
Maude Lebowski: Yes, they don't like hearing it and find it difficult to say whereas without batting an eye a man will refer to his dick or his rod or his Johnson.
    The Dude: Johnson?
