As some of those who have answered before me have mentioned many women do not penetrate themselves because of the danger of the long nails, they just rub their clit and or use toys to masturbate.

For those who do finger themselves with long nails I would like to point out is that there is a bit of difference between fingering yourself and having someone else do it in terms of feedback (I can say this from my own experience as someone with moderately long nails - not fake long, but grown out 3-5mm on each finder). If you are doing it to someone else then you don't get feedback about where your nails are touching because they don't have that much sensation, thus you can be causing damage without noticing, and partners generally don't complain unless it is notably uncomfortable for them. However doing it for yourself you get feedback both from your fingers and your vagina, thus you get a lot more feedback about if you are doing damage. With this additional feedback it is easier to make sure you are just using the pads of your fingers rather than the nails.
Those of us with long nails get used to using the pads of our fingers rather than the tips (in fact if you then cut your fingernails very short after having them long for a while it feels very strange for a while to again have sensation in the very tips).

I can't say for those who have extremely long nails (especially fake nails, or those shaped with square corners rather than round). I would imagine it makes it much more difficult.

If I have long fingernails, I simply won't masturbate. I either cut them, or if I have acrylic tips on, I just won't do it at all. Not only is masturbating with long fingernails uncomfortable, it's also a bit dangerous as you can cut or scratch both the inside or outside of your vagina, which will potentially make someone more vulnerable to infection as the bacteria has an open wound to enter.
