At what age do you think that age discrimination in modeling starts?

I am not talking about at what age is is too late to START to model, but at what age are female models not being hired as often as they used to because of their age.

I heard that Armani cancelled a deal with Tom Hiddleston (35) because he was too old for them. I think that's insane. He is a MAN, and if they decide to hire a 24 year old boy, they are stupid AF!
The same goes for women: girls like Gigi Hadid (21) or Kendall Jenner (20) are still GIRLS and they haven't yet blossomed into their beauty completeley. Women like Adriana Lima (35) or Miranda Kerr (33) or Irina Shayk (30) are on the HIGHEST POINT of their beauty, they have developed their beauty to the maximum, and they have already made a name out of themselves. Their faces are literally PERFECT and they have NO wrinkles, but I was thinking: would model agencies/designers rather hire Kendall or Gigi just because they are young, or would they hire Adriana, Miranda or Irina because they are more beautiful, even though they are older.

I have always thought that women are the most beautiful around the age of 30, before that they haven't completely matured and developed themselves. Biologically girls stop growing at around 15-16, but estetically I think that a girl can never be more beautiful than a WOMAN. Cause being a woman is the highest point on the beauty scale. When I say woman, I don't think JLo (or somebody else who is old), I think of a woman around 30, maybe 31, 32, 33...

At what age do you think female models are not as desired as they used to be? And who is more attractive: Kendall and Gigi or Adriana, Mirand and Irina? (These are all 2016 unedited red carpet photos)

  • Soooo you are making one of the most common mistakes out there -- specifically, you are equating models with beauty.

Nope. Make sure you don't have this misunderstanding.
Models are chosen to have a certain "look", yeah. But, generally speaking, that look doesn't -- and isn't supposed to -- necessarily correlate to "classic beauty", and it DEFINITELY has nothing to do with *men's* standards of beauty.
(I've met a grand total of ZERO straight men in my entire life whose fantasy woman is a size 0 or 00 -- unless they were bewitched by one very specific woman who was that size.)

This is *most* true for runway models, whose purpose is basically to be background objects. Basically, clothes hangers with legs.
The point of runway models is to choose the body type that will divert the LEAST amount of attention away from the clothes. Runway models are specifically supposed to be NOT "sexy" or "beautiful", because that would defeat the purpose!

More probably, you're thinking of editorial models -- think "glossy fashion ads".
These are the kinds of jobs with the most severe "age discrimination" of the sort you're talking about here.
Editorial models square up a LITTLE better with society's stereotype of "beauty"... but, only a little. (Rather than the "background" look that's most desired for runway, editorial models are supposed to have a look that's more "edgy". The problem with edgy, of course, is that the definition can change from season to season.)

I was an editorial model through my early-to-mid 20's. I did editorial shoots (which paid in "trade" -- i. e. free clothing and food -- but AWFUL pay), and showroom shoots (working with designers behind the scenes -- no exposure, but enough money to make a decent living).
I was already older than most other models, but I was willing to travel and live internationally on short notice, and I had a look that was in demand in certain countries... so that got me in the door.

    Anyways, enough background.

There are 2 reasons why editorial models are as young as they are (usually about 16-18 when they get started, and an average of about 20-21 in the actual editorial shoots).
    Those are:
    1) It's just the look. A more womanly body would distract from the ads themselves, and would focus attention more on the woman herself... and that's not the point. (Again, female beauty isn't the point.)
    2) Editorial modeling is, generally speaking, a stepping-stone to other kinds of things, like commercial modeling (where the really

    • big names are). So, most editorial contracts are in the 2- to 4-year range, after which lots of women move on to other things -- either other kinds of modeling, other things within the fashion industry, or... other stuff in life altogether. Srsly though, we NEED to get rid of this stupid idea that runway and editorial models are actually supposed to represent the pinnacle of female beauty... and, along with that, the ESPECIALLY stupid idea that modeling standards somehow represent what MEN want in a woman. (Every time I've gained 10-15 lbs in my life -- which is about the most my body has ever really let me gain -- I've suddenly been *swamped* with male attention, including more amorous attention from all my boyfriends... and now my husband. Lol) I HATE when people perpetuate this idea. It's a stupid idea, and it makes women feel like shit -- not to mention making women desperate to achieve bodies and looks that will actually make them LESS desirable to men (= the ultra skinny

    • look). Please do yr part to eradicate this idea from as many people's heads as you can, tx. <3

    • I don't think that runway models that look like hangers such as Kendall or Gigi are beautiful. But the latter three that I have mentioned ARE beautiful, even though they were/are runway models. I think that Miranda Kerr is one of the most beautiful women ever. Body AND face. I mean LOOK AT HER. She looks freakin 19! Who do YOU think are the most beautiful women in the world and do you agree with what I said related to the age of when I consider women to be most attractive.

  • Well it's pretty well discuss that post 30 women's looks go to crapper real fast. Hence, why so many women want to get married/and get desperate around late 20's. Women lose 90% of their eggs by 30 and as we all know fertility plays heavy part in attraction and it tends to show in women hence baby barbies.

I think the first sign of aging that would take away from a models looks is the youthful glow. You'll notice youthful glow is very apparent in 18-24 range but by 28-30 it's gone even when a woman maintains herself well and keep in shape men will notice this feature which takes away. A lot of guys if you ask them will tell you women tend to have a washed out faded look in their appearance post 25.

    Example of Glow

Women also tend to start putting on more masculine features in the face and fat around 30 mark and this tends to take away from their femininity which is important for models.

Example this is a young model in her early 20's

But she's kind of gotten a bit thicker and all around plumped out in her post 25 age

I think the fashion industry tends to have a bias towards thin models more so this might decrease model prospects. Overall, I think models tier models can hold out until mid 30's but most girls are probably done by late 20 in term of modelling for younger models.

  • By 30 women a lot of women have lost 40% of their looks. I'd wager models can hold on a bit longer so maybe 33-35.

  • Your opinion is irrelevant and it is basically the biological fact that women are peak in sexual attractiveness between 15 -24. Some may peak at different times depending on their health but most of the women you even mentioned looked better when they were young.
Also, what you define as a woman is wrong. A woman is generally 16 or older in most of the world and since the dawn of human history has been considered such.
    Get over it.
For most cases, the peak competition is 16-24 year olds.
As for when it's too late, well I'd say after 28 don't bother.

  • Their wrinkles are airbrushed off. Curious though, when does a boy/girl become a man/women? And why should age play a larger role than maturity when defining a man or a woman?

    • Age shouldn't. Yet, i often hear women call men scared little boys or peter pan men if they don't want to get married post 30.

    • @BubbleBoy69 hahahaha true

    • These are red carpet photos. Taken by paparzzis, whos job is to find the WORST pictures of celebrities. Those pictures are the ones that aren't edited. That's why many celebrities hate red carpet. The age where girls become women are around 30, for me. Though, it varries, due to a lot of factors: how young looking they are, the way they dress, their interests/hobbies, weather they are married or not, weather they have kids or not, the way they behave, and most importantly, how mentally mature they are. I am not a man, so I don't know, but I would say that for men it is around 35. They are mentally very immature usually.

  • Are you doing her dead in her sixties and seventies still look hot out there

  • People who bitch about age discrimination is modelling make me LOL. The whole goddamn point of a model is that they're hot. That's automatically discriminating against the non-hot. And that's the whole damn point. So the old models who are bitching about this practice only got their jobs to begin with because they were hotter than the other girls at the time they came up. NOW they're no longer as hot so they get kicked to the curb. Fucking deal with it! If that dynamic hadn't existed you would never have been famous to begin with.

And let's not get started on all the BS around people wanting to see a "realistic" beauty standard. That's such a load of crap. If I wanted to see a bunch of "real life" people, do you know what I'd do? I'd fucking go out and interact with the fucking real life people I can see every day in real life by walking out my fucking door! When we're watching entertainment or seeing aspirational marketing, we expect to see something hotter than we see in real life. We don't need to pay some "model" millions of dollars to be unattractive.

    • Thanks for most helpful!

  • To be honest a lot of girls begin looking like moms post 25.

    • Haha you must live in a very ugly hood, then...
