I'll try and share what I know. Going to a catholic middle school and lutheran high school, I can say the act of masturbation itself is not a sin. It falls into the same realm of sex and is considered ok.

That being said, thinking lustfully of others or porn is a sin. It'd be breaking the ninth commandment.

"Every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

Assuming you aren't married to the pornstar or person you are lustfully thinking about during masturbation, it is considered sinful. The act of masturbation itself isn't sinful, but the dirty thoughts often associated with masturbation are. Porn is most definitely sinful. So, for all intents and purposes, when you are masturbating, you are sinning in that regard. Granted, it's a venial sin (if you're Catholic), not a mortal one, but a sin nonetheless.

(That being said, I'm almost positive many christians do it anyway.)

According to the Christian churches all of that is a sin. Then you have to ask yourself, it that simply church law, or God's law. The funny thing about church law is those that make it never seem to live by it. God's law, why would God give men and women the tools, excuse the pun, to masturbate if He considers it a sin.
