Should we accept incest?

We are living in a time where gays & interracial dating is accepted when that would have been crazy talk 100 years ago! In the end, does incest hurt anyone? It doesn't, so do we have the right to judge? Marrying cousins has been pretty much acceptable for a while (& even the royals practiced that), so what about people who want to take it further? Technology is progressing so having close DNA that messes up breeding may not even be an issue soon. Gay people can't have children at all & their sexuality is not within the norm, but it's acceptable as no one gets hurt like other out of the norm sexualities. My stance on incest - I happen to think it's disgusting & would NEVER practice it! It's the stuff nightmares are made from! But it's an interesting topic & I'm wondering how others feel, especially in the light of how sexuality is changing & things that were considered crazy 100 years ago are the norm now, & you seem like the crazy one/jerk if you have a problem with gays/interracial couples.

First let's split incest into two very separate groups.

Consensual adult incest, and abusive incest.

Abusive incest, be it an adult and a child, or two adults but one is domineering over the other, I (and I imagine all people) would NEVER find acceptable under any circumstances, period.

Consensual adult incest is another matter. Most of us would be repulsed at the idea and wouldn't want it, but what are the specific reasons, logically, for disallowing it for people that are in that circumstance.

1: Religion.

Has no place in secular laws.

2: Personal disgust

Is no more of a good reason to be against incest then it is to be against homosexuals or inter-racial relationships. Personal disgust is not a valid reason, even if wildly shared.

3: Threat to children / offspring.

There's two problems with this.

a: What if they are infertile, or if it's a gay/lesbian relationship? Does this mean that hetrosexual incest is not allowed, but homosexual incest is ok?

b: Besides which, why don't we have laws for other DNA related issues. For instance, smoking and being over 40 when having children are both risky to the health of the child, but we don't have laws against either of those.

Whilst I'm like most of you, and the idea of incest is repulsive on an emotional level, when looked at with objectivity it's hard to find a specific reason to rule against it (in terms of consensual adult incest). Your comparing apples and oranges here. Homosexuality and interracial coupling are social constructs. Just like Chihuahuas and Rottweilers have the same DNA and can produce healthy offspring, a black man and a white woman have the same DNA and can produce healthy offspring. The only reason it was ever frowned upon was because PEOPLE THOUGHT it was in poor taste. Homosexuals can't reproduce, but there are other species of animals that routinely exhibit homosexual behavior, which means that it's not against nature, it's about pleasure and stimulation rather than reproduction. Perfectly natural, but PEOPLE THOUGHT it was wrong.

Incest though is completely different. There is hard scientific evidence that incest leads to birth defects, mutations, and other horrible things. People think incest is bad because of this evidence, not because of religion or social mores.

Natural behavior and taboo behavior are again, apples and oranges. Taboos are social constructs, and only exist because we say they do. I personally believe in the Westermarck effect regarding incest, and believe that depending on one's culture and circumstances it may or may not be acceptable. As long it's between consenting adults, it's not my business what they does. First of all, just because you're a couple doesn't mean you always gets children. Either it's a heterosexual couple who decides to not getting children and use protection or they are infertile or they are homosexual and therefor can't produce children. Another reason the law against incest is flawed is that the family members aren't necessary in biological family. Incest between step-family, adoptive-family and foster-family are also illegal in many countries which doesn't make sense, because they aren't in biological family and therefor the children won't be defected.

If society wants to ban something in order to decrease birth defects, it would have a greater impact if they simply banned people with genetic defects from having kids. Romantic and sexually interactions with two consenting adults aren't the same as pedophilia where something happens between a person who isn't mature enough to consent. Most adults are mature enough, children aren't mature enough. As long the incestuous couple doesn't make children, it won't be a problem. It's possible to allow people to have a sexual relationship without legalize them making biological children. Some couples are even gays, so they can't reproduce.
