Why are there so many black women (supposedly) becoming lesbians nowadays?

This is something I've noticed quite a bit in the black American community (unsure about other ethnicities in America). Why do you think lesbianism in black women is way more common nowadays than it used to be? Be as detailed as you wish in your answer.

  • *sigh*

I can't even deal with this question today.

    People don't become lesbians.

And the simple answer to why more lgbt people *in general and not just in the black community* are out these days is because as more people become accepting and open to homosexuality, more people feel less repressed and understand that its an option to act on their feelings and be openly homosexual or bisexual. Black lesbians or bisexuals are all over the place and always have been. Whether or not they felt it was right, safe, or okay to act on those feelings is another story.

    I'm a black bisexual.

  • No. This is not a "trend." Where have you "noticed" this? People choices are personal there are black lesbians just like there are Latina Lesbians, just like there are white lesbians.

    • Why do you sound offended?

  • It's becoming more acceptable. I don't think more girls are going gay,I think the ones who were are just now coming out.

  • Black women outnumber black men by a significant ratio in the U.S. More black men are incarcerated than black women, and black women live at least 30 years longer (on the average) than black men do. When you add all of this to a rising number of black men dating outside their race, this leaves millions of black women with a choice. Be heterosexual and alone, or be a lesbian and have a partner. You really can't blame many black women for becoming lesbians whether it's their choice or whether it's nature's response to black women's shortage of dateable, marriageable black men.

  • I think its only a phase for girls from 16 to 30 , I think because they might have this assumption that black guys are incapable of being boyfriends/husbands.

Women and Men have different views in terms of viewing, most of the women prefer to have a relationship while not all guys feel the same way.

I know a few friends who turned lesbian since high school but I really think eventually more than half of those girls will like guys again once they see a decent guy for a relationship.

  • From what the American media portrays the typical black male to be, I'm not surprised.

    • Haha!...

    • or do they not have any more options because no1 wants them...?

  • Women are beautiful and sexy. Especially black women, so why not start loving each other lol.

    • hey thanks for backing me up. I appreciate it, but I don't even know why I waste my time here. nobody likes the truth

  • You cannot just turn lesbian it isn't a trend.More women are coming out as lesbian now-a-days.

  • It's just becoming more acceptable for people to be gay.

  • i didn't eve know that was true

  • i haven't seen that

  • That's news to me!

  • Do you have statistics or did you do like do a poll where the entire "black community" checked straight or gay? Or did you just see a lot of black lesbians one day and decide "Gee there's been a rise in African American lesbians". I'm very curious as to how you came to this conclusion.

  • Huh? You can't turn lesbian

    • Some girls are attracted to both males and females and can choose which to date. He's not so much referring to them TURNING lesbian as he is referring to their choice to date women over men.

    • Whatever

  • likely multiple reasons...

perhaps everyone is tired of the 'black woman' stereotype and the drama of it and only other black womens will date each other. [Example

perhaps it is simply being more liberal/open in their ways.

maybe black people are not as religious as they were.

maybe black women are just more open to admit or come out.

  • I agree.

I found two websites which said it. link

But why should people be straight these days. There's IVF. In my area though, it's more and more men turning gay. but if more and more women want to be gay, that's goodtoo. Too much one one side is bad.
