When a guy says he has feelings for you?

My friend with benefits told me he has feelings for me. We where having an argument where I was trying to end things because it was much more complicated than I anticpated. But I'm not really sure what that means. I always found it to be an odd turn of phrase. I mean if people are in a relationship whatever the arrangement may be there is naturally some feelings even if it's not romantic love you at least come to care about the person's well being. When someone says they have feelings for you is that like saying they are falling for you, have fallen for you or is it a little more casual?

Usually when a guy says it he means he has strong feelings for you and wants it to be more then just friends with benefits or friends.
