The ACTUAL reason why prostitution should be legalized

The ACTUAL reason why prostitution should be legalized.

Across almost the entire US, prostitution remains illegal. The reason for this is that our cultural values frown highly upon paying or accepting payment for sex. However, this doesn’t mean sex workers should be treated as subhuman. I for one would never pay for or take a payment for sex. I’m sure most people share that same outlook. Most of us probably work “honest” jobs to make ends meet, too. Just imagine that your job was looked down upon, though. Imagine that people saw you as subordinate, as an object, and sometimes hated you because of your line of work. Imagine you always had a major risk of being attacked or robbed while you worked.

Prostitutes have to deal with this reality every day. You see, as this report shows, prostitutes face deplorable and cruel consequences for their work. I’ll highlight some of these things here:

· 82% of prostitutes have been assaulted while working.

· 83% of prostitutes have been threatened with a weapon.

· 68% of prostitutes have been raped while doing their jobs.

Obviously, these are much higher statistics than the general population. What would you do if you were assaulted or raped? Probably go to the police and report it so they can bring the scum to justice, right?

Wrong. If you were a prostitute, you wouldn’t have this option. Since prostitution is illegal, the prostitutes themselves are the ones who will be punished for the crimes. Since they have to provide in detail what happened, they also have to describe that they’re prostitutes. The police response is basically, “Ma’am, we’re really sorry that you were raped and all, but you’re under arrest for illegal prostitution.” So the prostitute is thrown in jail, even though they were assaulted and/or raped, while the attacker gets to walk free, ready to victimize someone else. Because of this, prostitutes can’t report the crimes that happen to them, they just have to go on. I guess this is part of the reason 68% of prostitutes have PTSD as well. Let’s remember that many prostitutes are forced into their profession, too. Therefore, they didn’t willingly choose to be victims.

If prostitution were legalized, now this legal loophole is destroyed. If a prostitute were to be attacked or raped, she (sometimes maybe he) could report it to the authorities without consequence. Now the police can search for and arrest the assailant, making our streets just a little safer. The current legal setup does not allow this to happen, though, so instead more violence and rape is allowed to continue without any justice.

This is why prostitution should be legalized. If I were to be attacked and ravaged, I would sure want to let the police know so there could be a chance of my attacker being caught and brought to justice. Prostitutes aren’t given these rights, they’re just left to die with our current laws. So please help prostitutes by allowing them the same rights and treatment all humans deserve, help support the legalization of prostitution.

Thank you for reading.

  • most people are prostitutes because they got into drugs and didn't wanna get an education. i dont think it should be legalized but these people should be able to report crimes that are being done to them without getting thrown in jail. prostitutes often have STDs and things like that. we have LEGAL prostitutes who are clean and trustworthy. they're called escorts and they choose to do their job. prostitutes are just dirty people who live on the streets. most prostitutes are women so im just going to stick to that for now. there are many shelters that will take women in and help them. its no ones fault that these people want to live on the streets and have sex for money. i think prostitution is one of the dirtiest jobs out there. its disgusting and i personally have no respect for a prostitute but if they're getting raped then they should be able to report it without getting arrested. the thing about being a prostitute is that you're not a "victim". drug users aren't "victims" either. its something you choose to do. i would not be okay with having prostitutes walking around my street in whore heels and tiny disgusting clothes. its disgusting but they do need help.

  • All these self righteous ignorants who give their opinion about a subject they literally don't know shit about...

How can this even be a debate still.

Of course it should be legal. It can't be erased, and is called "the oldest profession in the world" for a good reason.

And since this industry shakes millions of dollars per year, might as well tax it...

    • How can it be the oldest profession in the world? Please tell me...

  • I respect your opinion.
However , I can and will never view someone that receives money in exchange for sex as a person of great moral or one with a job for that matter.
Laying on your back and sucking dick for a living isn't a job.
    It's plain sleazy.
Prostitutes deserve to report crime that have happened to them (I agree this is a major loophole) that could be adjusted if it were legalized.
However a great majority of prostitutes are drug addicts that make poor decisions with their lives. They are not deserving of the abuse they receive but however they must take accountability for their actions. They are sleeping with strange men that can be those infected with a deadly virus (aids), killers , murderers etc.
It's only a matter of time before they are hurt in their profession.
"Porn" which is pretty much the filmed and legalized version of prostitutes displays horrors in the profession as well.
((I have a video I can link you to describing this If you are interested)).
No matter how we try to sugarcoat these professions there's a harsh reality that follows them.

    • I would like that link. However, I think you should look into child prostitution and human sex trafficking. Not everyone involved in prostitution had a choice.

    • @SilenRose Child prostitution and human trafficking is a different story. I believe that's not what his article is speaking about.

  • I agree.
Plus a lot of prostitutes don't get paid enough from normal jobs or can't even land themselves a decent job and resort to prostitution to make themselves a good amount of money for a stable life.
Its their life style choice so I don't see why it would be illegal, maybe because it could lead to rape or death, but they take that risk and they need it to get by in life.

  • I would think that its like almost any job that is looked down upon, fast food workers somehow are treated like crap for providing a service (yes it is relevant) I think it's because it's not actually a skilled trade, because everyone knows how to do what they do. It def should be legal though, there is a demand and you can tax it. It's really not much different than pornstars with the exception that there is protection and an agreement between the people involved. People love the sex trade for everything they hate it for. The only thing I question is if it would even benefit society that it be legal for husbands to cheat on their wives, which is the only reason I would disagree with it. At least strippers aren't supposed to sleep with them, but they prostitute for extra money.

    • Why would it be legal for them to cheat if prostitution is legalized? Its 2 different laws, adultery (cheating) isn't even really prosecuted in most states in the US or countries in Europe. If a guy wants to cheat, he'll find the most convenient way to do it whether thats stripper, prostitute, random hookup at the bar, etc.

    • I'm fully aware that it's not illegal I'm not stupid lol If it became legalized, it would become an acceptable to just go to a prostitute. That is what I'm saying. It would flip the social norm upside down. And prostitutes do get protection from the police because they need to catch the people that are hiring them.

  • The main reason it should be legal is because it's no ones business who anyone fucks, as long as they're of age and not hurting anyone else.

  • I support for #LegalizedProstitution

  • Agreed, it should be legal. Puritanical people can keep to themselves just as prostitutes could get off the streets and make business more safely. It's just ignorance to say you can somehow police it away when the demand for it is there. Some guys have a very strong desire to have sex and if a prostitute is the best way to satisfy that, then I see nothing wrong with them going that route. The same goes for women who may look for that.

  • I remember if people remember there's still child prostitution, and sex slaves out there which is one of the main reasons as to why it's illegal other than the spread of STD's. *Sips tea.* But whatever, that's none of my business.

  • Interesting! I think Sweden handled it well (still not 100% perfect, but at least better). Hiring a prostitute is illegal whereas being a prostitute is legal.

    • I like that.

  • thank you for shedding light on this. i'd never thought about the risk of rape, violence, etc that prostitutes face. it's too bad that they have to accept it. i heard that the role of pimps was to protect prostitutes. however i can imagine that they don't take their job too seriously. it's a hard situation no matter how you look at it.

  • why in the first place do they put themselves in that situation?

  • I'm sorry, but sex workers ARE subhuman. You can hate me for saying that, but it's just wrong to get paid to have sex.

    • Anyone should be able to report a crime done to themselves or to someone else, regardless if they are a "prostitute" or not.

  • I thought it was legal.

    • In utah.
