Ladies, Freeze Your Eggs

Ladies, Freeze Your Eggs

I'm in my early 30's and as soon as I was financially able I froze some eggs. Let's face, our lives are structured differently these days and many of us put off having kids because we uber educate ourselves putting off working, careers and family.

I love the attention The Mindy Project gave to the issue.

Honestly it comes down to an investment and peace of mind. At 37 your body is able to carry that baby but you want those 22 year old eggs.

Sure I know a couple women who had all their kids in their 20's but let's face it they are outliers these days. Most of us are still in school or training.

We aren't fortunetellers so even if you think you don't want kids just freeze it, trust it takes a weight off your shoulders and levels the playing field.

  • I'm not against freezing eggs but I think it will just end up moving the goalposts...

What I mean is that when egg freezing becomes more mainstream women will simply feel pressured to delay having children even longer, up to, and sometimes over, the limits of what egg freezing can do and then it's back to square one. It's a bit like how cellphones were supposed to give us more leisure time by increasing productivity but then employers caught on and demanded more work be done by the employees (I think the same will happen with self-driving cars: employers will subtly hint that employers who don't start working during the commute may face an increased risk of getting laid off).

    • True but it at least equals things for women as far as careers go. It's a safety net. That even if you think you don't want kids you secure. I think too many women feel the pressure of IF they want kids the time is now so they hastily make the decision. Having kids Truly should be a choice and well reasoned decision. Your right about cell phones and all of that but when you have kids on the fly out of panic you don't make the needed lifestyle changes and the kid just becomes another liability. Unfortunate enough to say that I've made changes in employment to wear I now at 33 can have kids. I make great money and and doing the same work but reasonable hours. Actually 30 hours a week and yoga at lunch. I'm ready to have kids. But the me that wrote this was saying just in case plan for the further. Women who want kids want kids and eggs in the freezer isn't an excuse. It's an insurance policy and there's a difference.

  • With my lifestyle I was going to do it but I think I could get Lamborghini cheaper.

    • A Lambo is $200k not $10k

    • I was over exaggerating obviously. I'm in Russia where it costs about 40k rubles to do. I make about 46k rubles per year. So there is literally no way I can pull that.

  • On the surface it appears to be a good idea, but given the cost of freezing your eggs for later use, I don’t believe, in my opinion, it is very practical, unless you just have a lot of disposable income just sitting in the bank or laying around. Most people don’t. Great if you can afford it, but not so good if you can’t. Especially, as one person already said, when she can just keep her legs closed until she wants kids. End of story.

  • Can i burn them instead? Lol I don't want them!

  • But if I don't have kids by a certain reasonable age, I'm not going to want any later - because it's just selfish - you want a baby, but you're not going to be able to take care of her/him much longer - if you have it at 50. (Surogate, of course.)

Also - if you do have it you're not going to be really able to run after it when they're todlers... it just seems so selfish to have a kid at a late age in life.
So if they're not going to have a great childhood - the kind that every kid deserves - why just go after satisfying your own selfish notions of offspring.

    • Also all the health risk giving birth to a child at the age of 40 and up I don't think she realize the risks she putting her child through or she would start popping babies before age 35.

  • I agree with you. However, as you said, not all of us are financially able to do it. That's very sad, I think.

    • Agreed I would really like to see more public awareness and programs. But the fact is it isn't kosher to put off having kids. Men aren't having kids any younger but women still get blamed. My thoughts are the mindset should be t is part of your schooling expenses. If you're going for an MD on loans you know you won't have time for kids so freeze your eggs. It isn't that unaffordable.

    • Yes, but the same counts for abortions. There still are lots of people against it, although in some cases, it is better to do it. I think a lot of people don't do it, because they don't think about what lies ahead. They might think that they will get pregnant very easy, while more and more women are struggling with their fertility. Most people tend to live their life in the moment. I understand that, but when you truly want to have children, it can be too late.

  • Its not having my eggs frozen that bothers me. Its the thought of some guy sucking them out of me with a hydralic air pump running a 33,000 revs a second

  • I don't see a point.. just wait until you want kids. I'm not gonna spend a but load of money to freeze my eggs when i can I just keep my legs closed lol

  • I wanted to do that but the cost $$$
I did tell myself tho, that if I have a daughter, I'd suggest for her do that in her early 20's so she didn't have to worry about "not being able to live her life/dream" or feel that she has to have kids by a certain age, or else...

    • Or better yet pay for her to do it. But don't worry by the time we have daughters it won't still be an issue. They call Hemmingway The Lost Generation. But Generatiokn Y will be the actual Lost Generation because most educated people aren't having kids... But thanks to the GOP the poor are breeding like rabbits.

    • I totally agree! And yes, the poor are breeding like rabbits and live on taxpayers' money (read: unemployment benefits and the like).

  • Unless i got cancer or some illness that makes it hard for me to concieve i wouldn't do it. The women in my family where having kids into their late 40's. i think im good

  • By the time I'm about your age, my child will be out of the house living a life of his own. I could not imagine trying to have children so late in life. More power to you, even if it's not for me I'm glad you were able to take step in preserving your genetic code.

  • There is absolutely no way on this earth that I wish to be a decrypted middle aged parent, thank you.

  • I saved money for college, a car, and my house. I didn't even think of saving for this, and now there's no way I could do this any time soon. Ah well. Hopefully those that are able can still have time if they want to do this.

  • I would like to do it but its so expensive..

    • I truly understand But keep this in mind, talk to your doctor about it as she may know programs, it is going to get cheaper, never shut that door in your mind. It may not be an option today but that doesn't mean it won't be an option tomorrow. Stay informed and own your reproductive health my smart girl.

    • Thank you I'll definitely

  • Iv been thinking of freezing my seed as well even though i don't want kids now but if I ever do later in life it would be there from the 20 something me not the 50 year old me I didn't get as far as the cost or reliability though?

  • I would consider doing that when I'm in my 30s, but it's just rediculously expensive.

    • You need fresh eggs anything ver 32 is no good.

  • first sentence kinda confused me. are you not 38? at what age did you freeze them?

    • I'm 31 and I froze them at 28.

    • gotcha

  • I already have 2 kids and got my tubes tied at age 22 because I can't afford anymore babies.. there is no way I could ever afford doing this lol if I was rich I probably would tho

  • What's the point?

    • To freezing eggs? I don't mean the kind you eat I'm referring to the kind that make babies.

    • I know that, i can read lol. I just don't see the point of wasting all that money if you don't want kids.

    • That makes sense, you're still busy being a kid as you should be. Well done! I've honestly since your age planned on adopting in my late 30's and still plan. But I don't know I may want a genetic child at some point. As a man you don't quite feel that door slam closed as women do. I froze eggs just to keep the door open, to take the weight off. And now years later I want kids of all sorts. Biological kids and adopted. You meet someone, fall in love and want to make kids with them. I'm still able but I'm glad to have the back up.

  • If I hit 30 and I don't have a significant other, I will freeze them (if I am financially able). I want to be a mom and want to have healthy babies. The best way to do that is to have younger eggs.

    • Eggs are too old at 30 for freezing mine were considered old at 28.

    • That is not true. Most clinics suggest that women freeze in either twenties or early thirties. What is true is that clinics won't want to freeze any eggs at 35, which is when the percentage of children with genetic disorders like down syndrome drastically increase.

    • I'm not talking clinics in talking viability. They do better fertilized and eggs just aren't as viable after 26 or so. StRt by looking at egg donor guidelines then take it from there to see where you end up. Yes you can freeze your eggs at 30. If at 30-35 you ask a physician for advice they won't tell you that you aren't a candidate. But at your next well woman OBGYN appointment as them the target age range, costs and likely outcomes. Just revisit the issue before 25 with your health care professional. It comes down to cost and viability. The two are inversely correlated.

  • While I don't think it's a bad idea, Women should just know that the reliability of frozen eggs (as opposed to embryos) . It can work, but it's certainly not guaranteed.

The last data I saw from the UK for instance, suggests that they've made 580 embryos from frozen eggs, which resulted in 20 live births.

If you've got a lot of income, it's worth doing because it -may- help, but it's still not something to be relied on.

  • Its really your choice and I hope it works out for you. Personally I think women these days wait to long and often pay the price this is mostly due to feminism propagating the notion that women can have it all when the real truth is they can't as something will have to be sacrificed from their lives. If men can't have it all how could women.
