What it feels like to have the IUD Skyla placed

What it feels like to have the IUD Skyla placed.
For any woman who is thinking about having the IUD Skyla placed in their uterus.

The day I went to have Skyla placed I had no clue what to expect.I figured it wasn't going to be a big deal or that painful.OMG I WAS SO WRONG! First when they start it kinda feels like your having a Pap test. Then the pain starts. Not sure what all they did but I do know when they told me they were putting it in.It hurt so much.I tried to think of any happy place.Biting my teeth and just tensed up.The gynecologist told me that I was doing good and kind of sounded impressed that I wasn't screaming or crying. Boy was I crying my brains out and screaming in my mind.Luckily the pain of the whole thing doesn't last.Afterwards I couldn't stand for to long.I started having painful cramps like mad.So once I got into the car.I cried so much from the pain.Just the vibrating of the car was to much on the drive home.

All you have is a little string hanging out into your vagina area but it never gets in the way.The only way for Skyla to be pulled out is if you take the string with your finger and pull it.The gynecologist will probably tell you to fill up in there to make sure you still feel the string.Just to make sure Skyla is still in the correct spot.

After about like 2 weeks I think or so they want you to come back.Just to check and make sure Skyla is still in the correct spot. How that feels when they check isn't painful.Just would feel like if they were checking for a baby inside you if it was in the earlier stages.I've never been pregnant so for me it was very weird seeing all of that area on a giant T.V. XD

Now I've had Skyla in me for over a year.I havn't had sex yet with it in me so I can't say how that will go but I dont see it being a problem.

So what I had learned that day was MUST.TAKE.PAIN KILLERS!I would also think about taking stuff for cramps because it will make you cramp like crazy or well for me it did. Also now when I have my monthly curse my boobs do get extremely sore depending on how heavy it might be.Also I have cramps from time to time

I do recommend any women who are tired of remembering to have to take a birth control pill and refilling it each month. Skyla only has to be replaced every 3 years.

  • I totally feel your pain! About 10 months ago I got the copper IUD called Paragard and I thought it would be an easy process as I was told. But holy shit was is the worst pain of my life. I got so sick right after like really nauseous and dizzy and pale. I fainted when I tried to get up and walk and then my boyfriend had to help me. The cramping for the next two weeks were miserable. It got better as time went by but when it became around that time of the month again I would get the worst cramps of my life. I couldn't go to work sometimes and I would toss and turn crying out in pain some nights. My periods were super heavy too. I'd say all that lasted for a good 5-6 months. Today my periods are back to normal and I have little cramping with my period. I would recommend the Paragard I've been really happy with it no side effects after the first 6 months. I opted for the non hormonal copper one over the hormonal one because the hormones made me crazy and gave me yeast infections for some reason. I'm not planning on having it taken out anytime soon but I can't help but wonder how that's going to feel

  • Yep. Painkillers and planning for cramps.

As a guy whose girl had an IUD... it was great in terms of protection! We felt no worry there :)

On the negative side, it IS possible to feel the string with the penis (for some guys and for some girls - probably a guy who is >= average, and a girl with a cervix closer to the opening of the vagina?) And hitting a sharp "string" with sensitive bits *hurts*.

So. Go slow the 1st time. Make sure the angle you're at won't cause problems, and if it's not comfortable, change positions - we found that missionary sucked, but anything where I was coming in from behind worked great. So we had lots of sex like that :)

    • Did y'all go back and ask if they could shorten the string then? For me the gynecologist told me the string was longer so if while sex or something. If it got in the way to come back and she would shorten the string. Plus she had tuck the string behind the cervix. Or well I guess over time it probably comes out from hiding maybe XD

    • Her gynecologist's suggestion was - I kid you not - to lie to me, and tell me that it had been cut shorter, because apparently guys can't feel the strings. ... she went to a different one after that. Actually, after she'd had it in for half a year, it got easy enough to tuck it out of the way. I'm not sure why it wouldn't stay before that, but we had a long time where we'd try to move it and then in a little bit it would be pointing back down the vagina >< Hmm... she ended up having to have the IUD out (much less painful, by the way - a single "ouch!" moment) after she developed bad cramping. All of a sudden I wonder if we moved it somehow trying to tuck it out of the way every time we had sex...

    • That's good about the part where it doesn't hurt as much. That really sucks about the string though and I might have been that. Since what I remember the gynecologist said like u can feel the string to make sure it's still in the correct spot but never pull on it at all.

  • Reading this made me cringe, and slightly nauseous. Never ever putting that shit up my vagina :/

    • Hey, on the plus side it can make your period lighter or even stop it completely, which is pretty great. Makes it worth it for me, at least.

  • Take painkillers definitely. I felt violated if I'm honest. The fact it was a medical procedure just made me feel even more confused as I hadn't been sexually assaulted but I felt like I had. I went home and cried from the pain and the trauma. Pain wasn't too bad but I couldn't sit, only stand or lie down for the rest of the day. I was really upset for a few days after and never went back to have it checked. Had it five years now and never one issue. I had the non-hormonal one fitted. Flow is heavier but nothing you can't handle.

  • I've heard horrible things about that bc. Hope you don't have to experience any crazy or weird side effects.
I had the implant in my arm smh it was horrible...

  • That looks ruddy terrifying o_o

    • Ah the things women do to try and not get pregnant. lol

    • Lol yeah man makes me a little glad to be a chap. We just need to slip a little bag on. Women take pills get implants in their arm get that jammed in their coochie... Sod that!

  • All that pain from a tee shape apparatus... Is it worth it? You are still taking some form of pills to subside the pain..

    • Oh no I'm not taking anything for pain now. Just would take normal cramping ones for periods but everyone takes them for when that happens. Nope just feel pain for when they place it which doesn't take long and they warn you right before they place it so your ready for it. Reason why I wanted to have one placed was mainly for the fact of having to keep remembering to take it plus all other birth control pills messed up my mood and made me angry majority of the time and just in a foul mood. Ever since I've had it placed I haven't had any mood problems at all.

    • I don't get cramps. One day sometimes.. But its not severe.

  • Wow! Thanks for being brave and sharing this. I've actually been pondering this myself although I've had a baby so don't know if it would hurt less or not. Do you know why Skyla if different from Mirena or the Paraguard? I'm trying to figure out what my best option would be considering pills are hard to remember.
    Thanks

    • Skype is built more for women who have never been pregnant before so it's much smaller compared to Mirena. Just if you do have one place like I said above take some pain killers and stuff for cramps.

    • Oh okay, thanks for your info!!

    • np :)

  • The heck is this thing?

    • It's a type of birth control that is supposed to be better at protecting females from getting pregnant than the pill. lol

  • Why put it in if your not going to have sex waist of time really

    • Not really since I had no clue how my body would react to it. Plus I didn't know if my body would reject it and it end up falling out or something. So I had rather just see how it worked with my body first.

    • I see now that makes sense at least you know this is not for you. And your health is the most imports thing
