Accidental, non-sexual hymen breakage - how, and how common?

I encourage people to answer anonymously if they find the subject to be embarrassing or objectionable. I am looking for candid, honest, uninhibited replies. Let's educate ourselves and each other here. I knew a girl who told me this story. She said that during a sleepover, someone dared her to insert her flute into herself, and a 'friend' thought that it would be funny to kick it all the way in. They freaked out when the blood started, and the chrome-plated finish made it look worse than it really was. When one of her friends told other students at school, the teasing and abuse got so bad that had to change schools. Her school life was ruined because of a lack of education, both for these girls and for the students at her school. What I want to know is, how common is an event like this? Not this specific sequence of events, just non-sexual hymen breaking. No romantic sexual contact, and no intentional removals. Just instances that you weren't trying to have sex of any kind, and it broke accidentally. I've heard of loss due to athletic activity, such as horse jumping, gymnastics, and martial arts. No, rape doesn't count as an accident. We all know that hymens break during sex, even if it's non consensual. If rape were an accident, all teenagers would have an insurance policy covering it under some sort of Gerber Grow-Up plan from their parents.

  • Your hymen can break during sex or masturbation, or from inserting a tampon or physical exercise. However, that doesn't mean that inserting a tampon will always break it. There are really no rules. Some girls are born without hymens, and some give birth without breaking them. They can stretch without breaking or tear slightly instead of breaking completely. It can be sudden and obvious or gradual and completely unnoticeable. Often, only a doctor can tell whether your hymen is still intact or not. I think it's probably quite common for people to break their hymen without having any idea that they did. I don't know how common it is for it to break in a non-sexual way, but it is definitely something that can happen. However, it's not something that should matter.

  • Yes, I know it's common to happen, especially due to the athletic activities you mentioned. Anything that enters the vagina could break the hymen, unless it's something very small, like a tampon. Now, I also know the hymen is not exactly the same for every woman. In my case, it was so flexible that I still had it for years after I started having sex; for many women, like me, it doesn't break in their first time, so there's no blood, nothing. Other women have a more delicate one.

  • You can tear your hymen while riding a horse, inserting a tampons, riding a roller coaster, an other things I can't think about

  • Non sexual hymen breaking is pretty common. Climbing fences, riding horses, it can happen a number of ways. Especially if the girl is rambunctious growing up.

  • I don't think this is common. I personally don't know anyone who has broken there hymen from athletics or horse riding. but then again, why would they tell me that? lol And I would never stick a flute up my coochie! WTF!

    • Most people don't realize they've broke it doing these activities though. It's very common.

  • Riding a bike can also break the hymen.
In fact, most sports can break the hymen.
Objects inserted can break the hymen.
In fact, even doing daily activities can break the hymen.

I don't see why there is such a big deal around this.

  • Very common among girls that exercise and are active in sports. I believe I broke mine either horseback riding or running track. My cousin broke hers doing gymnastics

  • hymen tearing is pretty common dude.. mostly caused by sports/masturbation/insertion of objects

  • You know there are different opinions even by doctors. I was asking 3 gynecologist and one of them said its common, another 2 its uncommon. Why i asked whem? Because i was concerned of breaking my hymen.

  • I think its pretty common. I think mine was probably broke before I had sex. In school I played volleyball and softball so thats a lot of stretching and stuff. I do think it helped in the long run though when I did have sex because I didn't have any pain and I didn't bleed any.

  • Well a hymen dosent actually break it stretches. The blood is from a tear in the hymen.
