Why is oral sex considered sex?

I know this may sound like a stupid question but I seriously don't get why oral sex is considered sex. Ok maybe someone could argue that you could still get STDs from oral... but Im pretty sure you could only get herpes, which you can also get from kissing and kissing isn't sex. Then maybe someone else would argue, well its one person making contact with another person's genitalia, but then why aren't hand jobs and fingering considered sex? I don't get it. Does it have to do with openings? lol. Someone please explain.

  • You don't get why sexual activity is called sex. The problem is that you and many other people consider "sex" to mean "coitus". "Coitus" is a specific act where the genitals of two people are joined, usually a penis and a vagina. "Sexual intercourse" is generally considered to be "coitus" but can be more general and even include other acts you mention, but most people do not mean it as that general.

"Sex" can mean gender, as in "what sex are you?", but in terms of activity, "sex" means physical contact that is related to the genitals, in other words "sexual activity". So "sex" includes "oral sex", "anal sex", and, yes, even hand jobs.

Some people apparently have difficulty with terms like "coitus" or "sexual intercourse" and shorten it to "sex", which actually means something a lot more general. But, as with many mis-uses, the use of "sex" in its specific meaning spread and is widely accepted. Does not change the fact that it actually means any sexual activity.

    • gotchya :) that makes sense too :)

  • Cause there are two sexual organ both meeting their sexual desire, so we defined this win-win situation is sex. hand doesn't have a sexual nerve, you got what i mean?

    • ah I see... this makes more sense lol

    • stacking up our both hand's neural network even can't compare with a single upper lip, not even mention the whole sensory of mouth, in cerebral cortex, the most sensitive input is lip don't think is genitals , believe it or not. and why babies need nipple, it's no coincidence, everything has its plan. If two place getting their pleasant through physical contact, then it is sex. otherwise is a giving.

  • Because oral is defined as words by mouth. But eating someone out or giving head isn't words by mouth. Oral sex=mouth sex.
    Sexual intimacy performed by mouth.
It makes sense to call it oral sex. But it's not the kind of sex that makes you not a virgin. You know?

    • This makes more sense than what other people are saying but some people argue if you've done oral you've had sex. If its sexual intimacy performed by mouth then why isn't sexual intimacy performed by hand considered sex lol. Point is. To me, intercourse and oral are two very different things. Yet they are both categorized as sex, which is something I don't understand.

    • I figure if you wanted to you could call hand jobs and fingering, hand sex. It also makes sense. It's just not widely used, so it doesn't sound as more or less "normal" as oral sex sounds. I personally believe that people are virgins intill they have been penetrated by a penis or inside a vagina. I also don't personally believe that sex toys take away virginities. But everyone has their own beliefs :P

    • haha agreed :p

  • It's a sexual activity, as it involves pleasing the genitals, but it's not the more universal type of sex (intercourse).

  • I actually consider the act of oral sex more intimate than sex itself.

  • Some people do consider hand-jobs sex. Have you read any of the questions about wives unhappy their husbands are getting happy endings at their massage parlors?

Basically, I count it as sex if you (or your partner) are cumming due to shared, intentional, actions. (ie: a friendly kiss/hug that makes you orgasm may let him (and you?) off the hook; one with tongue, or a lingering kiss with eye-fucking? Nope).

Just like having anal means you aren't a virgin, even if you still have your hymen.

    • gotchya, makes sense :)

  • I've always considered it just foreplay.

    • But by definition it's sex lol. I want to know why that is.

  • I don't consider oral to be sex

    • But by definition it's sex lol. I want to know why that is.

  • Well its not considered sex like the real deal, it's more or less considered a form of sex. It doesn't remove virginity, it's simply a different of stimulating genitals.

Think of sex as a bucket of KFC chicken and oral is the side gravy.

    • ahahhahahahhaha gotchya :p

  • Because it's still a very intimate and sexual act conducted with another person.

  • Ask bill clinton... ha... touching another person in a sexual way is sex... if you had a husband and another woman only used her mouth would that be sex? I think you know that answer...

    • But then why aren't hand jobs and fingering considered sex? To me it doesn't make sense why oral is sex.

    • No that's just considered cheating. Hell if you kiss another girl you didn't fuck her but you still cheated.

    • I understand that its all cheating but that still doesn't answer why oral is considered sex while other things aren't lol.

  • Sexuality, yes, of course. Virginity ending "sex", no.
You can get STD from oral. Michael Douglas got HPV, which became cancer.
Fingering and HJ are sexuality but not virginity ending "sex".
Cucumbers, vibrators, dildos and tampon applicators do not end virginity.
Virginity is both a state of mind and of specific sexual experience.
The most mind-blowing oral, either way, do not end virginity.

Penis-penetrative intercourse, vaginal or anal, end virginity.

    Hope this helps

    • yup thanks :)

  • i don't consider it sex

    • But by definition it is... I am curious why that is!

    • you should change that

    • lol I don't have the power to change definitions :p

  • I don't consider oral to be sex too
