Is Lube Bad for Clitoral/Vaginal use?

I'm asking about all types of lube. I used Doc Johnson Flavored Heating Lube, and while my boyfriend swears he didn't put any inside of me,I got a yeast infection for the first time in years. We were wondering if it's an ingredient in that lube that makes a girl more susceptible? I thought perhaps it was glycerin (sugar?), but I feel like all lube has that in it. So, I was wondering a series of things: was it perhaps not the lube that gave me an infection, just weird timing? If it was the lube, do you think I now have maybe an immunity to it or something? Is glycerin bad for clitoral/vaginal stimulation? What lube should I try?

  • This question is old, but since every answer given was completely wrong, I'm going to chip in and hopefully, when someone finds this site the same way I did, they won't read a bunch of b.s.

    1) The lube probably caused the infection. You seem educated and perhaps you realize yeast naturally lives in the vaginal. Yeast eats starch and sugar, and that is why sexual health practitioners advise against the use of lubes that contain glycerin. A flavored lube is obviously going to have glycerin in it. BAD for vaginal use. If you use it on your partner and he didn't shower, he more than likely introduced the amounts of glycerin vaginally.

    2) Someone said multiple partners would give you a yeast infection. This is false. Absolutely 100% false.

    3) A dirty penis, or sweaty balls, will not give you a yeast infection. This is not the most common way to get one, because it's not a way to get one at all! I don't know where people come up with this stuff sometimes. An unclean partner may introduce bacteria into the vagina, so you may end up with bacterial vaginosis, but not a yeast infection.

Since a yeast infection is nothing more than having all the microorganisms of your vagina out of balance (by A) eliminating the organisms that eat yeast or B) having conditions that allow yeast to grow in excess, that really narrows downs the ways you can get it.

First of all, USING SOAP is the most common way to get a yeast infection. Summer's Eve and other vaginal washes are the worst. Don't use soap! You only need warm water. If you use soap/douches, etc you kill off all the bacteria that keep the yeast population in check. Your vagina is self cleaning, so all you need to do is run water over the inner labia, and then you can use a non-scented, gentle soap like a Dove white bar to cleanse the outer labia and your bikini area (because we all know how stinky that bikini line gets in the summer time) Cleaning should really be nothing more than rinsing away all the stuff your vagina has already washed out for you. I've found that a detachable shower head is the best, but you can also just use a cup to run warm water over your vagina for cleaning.

Make your partner use an unscented soap on his genitals; you don't want him putting harsh chemical soaps inside your vagina.

Yeast grows in moist environments. If you shave your pubic hair, be conscious of the fact that your vaginal area will be more moist during warm months because there is no hair to whick away the excess sweat. Consider leaving your hair during warmer months if you ordinarily shave.

In closing : yes, the lube probably introduced a lot of glycerin into your vagina that the yeast present munched on, which allowed them to get nice and nourished and then reproduce. There are plenty of glycerin free lubes, some are even all natural and organic. Search exclusively for glycerin and paraben free lubes and see if you find something you like.

    • This was super educational. Thanks.

  • I never had problems with lubes , but I only used them clitoral so I can't really help you

  • i can answer all your questions...first no it wasn't the lube and not the timing at all...2)the sugar in the lube is how it gets flavor and you can pretty much try any lube.

    • Wait, so it wasn't the lube and not the timing, so what was it?

    • Honestly there are so many ways to get an infection and it is always very easy as well but the lube itself was not it.....the most common way to get an infection is (dirty d*ck) basically....Like sweaty balls, one or more partners etc

    • Hmm. We're both monogamous, and we didn't have actual intercourse. He'd washed his hands-- I'm kind of obsessed about that-- and he basically just did oral. :( Maybe I was just overdue for an infection? lol
