Penis smells bad even though I wash it daily?

I shower daily and I always make sure to carefully clean my penis with water and soap, but right after I pee or masturbate (or when it just gets sweaty) it starts to smell fishy. I don't think the smell is noticable through my clothes, but I can clearly smell it when I take my pants off. I'm uncircumcised, and I know that's the reason why it can start to smell bad, but is there really nothing I can do about it without having to wash it multiple times a day? It can't be because of an STD because I've never had any sexual contact, and I don't see how it could be an infection as I clean it carefully every day. Anyone have any advice?

  • Yes, stop washing it. You should never, ever wash under your foreskin with soap. I, too, found this out the hard way. Your penis is perfectly capable of keeping itself clean. The most you should do is flush it out with warm water when you shower.

    The foreskin (like the vagina) contains it's own culture of protective bacteria. When you wash with soap you kill off that culture which lets other microbes (like fungi) which soap doesn't kill overgrow. This is why the smell gets worse the more you wash. Soap also irritates the delicate tissues of the genitals.

    This is exactly why women are told not to douche. Unfortunately, men's health advice is still stuck in the stone age and western doctors seem to know nothing about the uncircumcised penis.

    Sounds like you have a yeast infection. The symptoms are the same for men as for women (fishy smell and itching) minus the discharge. Go your pharmacy and get yourself a tube of antifungal cream. You don't need a prescription. Most of them are for women (Monistat, Canesten) but there are some for men (Lotrimin). The men's ones are usually used for athlete's foot and jock itch. Either will work. Get it, apply it to your penis (following the instructions on the tube) and never wash your foreskin with soap again.

    If that doesn't clear it up, see a doctor. Preferably a progressive one who believes in conservative treatments. Some doctors will use any excuse to prescribe a circumcision.

    • You sure it could be an infection? It doesn't itch at all, it's just the smell, and the skin of the penis looks completely normal.

    • Yeah. It's a fungal infection, not a bacterial infection. Exact same thing happened to me and the cream took care of it.

    the doctors have told me that arousal / sex smells can linger on the
    penis it's all got to do with engaging in some type of sexual activity
    such as masturbating , sometimes we have discharges long after we
    are done masturbating and or having sex.. The only thing i do is keep
    cleaning down there real good hoping it smells better but doctors tell me
    it's nothing to do with infection and i sure don't have STD cause i'm virgin
    so yes it will happen..

  • Sounds like a case of blanitus. It is not uncommon in the uncircumcised penis. You might want to consult a physician. They can help you find the best solution.

  • Regardless... I hope you use condoms, ALWAYS!. And you should use an antibacterial penis care product too... this will ensure that your penis is extra clean and prevent any sort of bacteria transfer during condomless sex acts like oral etc. Trust me.. this will save you from a lot of worry and anxiety.   • That smell you smell may be the mucus membrane itself. Most people, girls included don't mind the scent.

    If your worried check the smell of your taint or your gouch. They should smell different then the pens in a more arm pit way.

    Also, I'm told us hooded gentlemen should not use soap, as it dries out the membrane ( may make it go overactive to compensate)

  • It sounds like a fungal or yeast type infection. Pick up an anti fungal at a pharmacy. The masturbation is not making it worse... as you know over 95% of young guys jerk off often (though they will never admit it), so don't stop that!
