Girls, Why do I keep getting blood clots?

I've had my period for 3 years now and I continiously get bloodclots regularly during my period, like daily. I heard you will get them less frequently as you've had your period longer, but I've been having mine for over 3 years already. Does anyone know why I still get them, is there a specific reason why I do?

  • I'm 27... Have had my period since 13.. Yes it is very normal. Depending on the size and frequency in a day however might need to be investigated. I get a few small ones daily.. They're more frequent when I have cramps as it's the actual piece of lining coming off in chunks not smooth fluid like. If you get clots that are larger than the palm of your hand consider going to the doctors. If they stay small I wouldn't worry. I'm a nurse and paramedic. :)

  • That's pretty normal for most girls and women. I get them in the beginning of my periods usually. It's just bits of tissue and blood that has been sitting there a while and gets gooey (sorry for the gross wording). Exercising and moving your lower body around close to the time of your periods and after, helps that a lot. Plus you may need to drink more water

  • Those aren't blood clots, those are chunks of uterine tissue and they never stop. People call them blood clots, but that isn't what they are.

  • It's just chunks of uterus. It's not really a problem. Try drinking lots of water, being dehydrated may make the blood more likely to clump together

  • Like clots in your veins? A clot coming from your vag is actually the tissue lining your vagina.

  • It's normal. Don't worry. Usually the clots are due to extremely strong uterine contractions (I think?) so if you notice that you have really bad cramps when you have a lot of clotting, that's why.

  • That's normal, menstrual blood is rarely free from clots.

  • Discharge? Or actual blood clots like deep vein thrombosis?

    • no no, I mean when I'm on my period my blood isn't just all liquid. I also get blood clots.

    • It's your "egg/s" breaking away from the uterus :) my mom always described it as a scab being pulled off /:

    • aah ok, so you'll just keep getting it?

  • It's normal. Everybody gets those.

  • that is normal it is the cloting protein in the blood acting out, it does not act inside your vagina as it is acidic in nature, i am a medical student

  • Actually I've been having more of those recently... I don't think it's age related and they're mostly normal.
I've heard that those form where the blood concentrates when you're sleeping and in other positions for a while, since the plumbing isn't exactly vertical down there... haha.

  • You always get them. It's not blood clots but the lining of your wall coming apart
