Your way is probably the most common among guys with pubes on the shaft. You see it a lot in porn.

My advice is trim. Never shave. The reason? Prickle prickle. You'd have to shave every morning to be ready for spontaneous sex. I cannot imagine doing that much maintenance. Never in a million years.

If you trim, you get a similar effect with no irritation. :)

Trim around the penis, shave the balls (very carefully). Apparently, shaved balls are more suckable.
