I suspect the reason opinions are split in the poll is because there are at least two different meanings of waste.

One of the meanings is more like squander. So, for example, if you won the lottery, enough money to last a lifetime, but spend it quickly on nothing in particular and then had to go back to working because you ran out of money then it would be said you had wasted your winnings. By that definition of waste, no you can't waste your sperm. With them being produced continously, to re-visit the money alalogy, its more like a considerable daily allowance than winning the lottery.

Another meaning of waste is "not used for it's intended purpose". If you have a meal that is too large to eat so what you don't want ends up in the trash then that food has been wasted because food is produced to be eaten and it wasn't. By that definition of waste then yes, when masturbating our sperm are being wasted but then for most of a guy's life his sperm are going to waste one way or another. If it isn't jerking off then it's squirting them into a mouth, the end of a condom, or into a girl who is on the pill, already pregnant, in the three out of four weeks of her cycle where there is no egg present and won't be while those sperm are still alive etc. Most guys have only a handful of children and yet make sperm every day. He can't save them up for another time as they don't live that long so the only choice is to enjoy ejaculating them in whatever way is available to him or forgo that enjoyment and abstain which, as well as being no fun, is really hard to do and will leave him tense and edgy.

Some of the other replies are effectively saying "shouldn't the guy have sex instead?" Apart from the fact that it is, usually, no less wasteful (by the 2nd definition) it is not like guys turn down sex and decide to j/o instead. Guys usually masturbate last thing at night and, by then, it is a choice whether to enjoy that orgasm solo or go without one. By the next time he might have a chance at sex, he'll have built up another load and will be able to fully enjoy that opportunity.

My personal view is that there is plenty to go round so the answer to your question would be know. It would be nice if that every time you felt like a sexual release that you were lucky enough to be with someone you had a connection with and you wanted to have sex but that is a very unlikely scenario.

How can they waste an unlimited resource?

Their bodies are constantly producing it and unlike women, who have a finite supply of eggs, men produce sperm constantly throughout their lives. So how can they waste it?

no. the body makes more. as long as the body is healthy and sexually capable, it will keep making sperm. we don't have just a finite amount, and then it's gone.

nope, you would ejaculate anyways (at night, wet dreams for example/sometimes just because the body needs to), even if you dont masturbate. sperm dies anyway at some point (i think few days lifetime).
the male body produces sperm somewhat constantly anyways

Actually, ejaculation can be helpful in removing ineffectual sperm. After a week without ejaculation, sperm becomes less powerful. So masturbation once in a while can be productive for procreation.
