the nipples are more of an erogenous zone, which means if they are hard for a sexual reason, they need to be stimulated. another idea, her shirt could have been rubbing them (sometimes that happens and they can chafe too, not fun)

For me it happens when I am cold, or when they are touched, especially by something wet. It can happen when I'm turned on but it's inconsistent. It's not necessarily an indicator either way.

I've never had this happen to me when I was turned on. And I've been turned on many times. There could've been a sudden draft, or her body might have suddenly shifted a little in temperature, which causes goosebumps and.. yes, the rising of nipples!
