I have a coldsore on my gums and I kissed my boyfriend. Can I get herpes?

I have read things online saying that you shouldn't kiss your boyfriend if you have a cold sore because you could get herpes. Is that true? How high is the risk? and we only made out. thats it so i only kissed him on the mouth.

  • Cold sores are just part of an Herpes strain, but it is possible to contract the disease because that area is infected. Its basic anatomy. Its the same as with chicken pox and pink eye or TB. Its contagious, and anything that is contagious can result in you being disease and infection prone as long as your immune system is weakened. So regardless of the risk, stop taking risk. Be smart and safer for him and for yourself. Always wash your hands throughly and keep your hands away from your mouth.

    • okay thank you. can I try to get rid of the cold sore and be fine?

    • @Asker Well its best to go to your doctor and have it checked instead of taking uneducated guesses. Because herpes and cold sores look practically the same unless its proven otherwise. But even if you get tested, your boyfriend should as well.

    • Cold sore is oral herpes , You have to get tested by your Dr. It sounds like to me you have a canker sore which is caused from acidic foods and drinks. Go buy some oral gel.

  • If you have a cold sore then chances are, you already carry the HSV-1 virus since the virus is what causes cold sores. It's actually pretty common, a lot of people who carry the virus don't even know they have it. If you kiss him while you have a cold sore, you can spread the virus to him if he doesn't have it already.

    • Finally someone who knows what's their talking about.

  • A cold sore is a form of herpes. It will spread to other areas of you do not wash your hands proper. Also can spread it to you partner by kissing and by oral. And having a sore in your mouth is not a cold sore, it's a kankor sore. Those can not be spread.

  • are you sure it's a cold sore? usually oral herpes is on your lips. are you sure you don't have a canker sore in your mouth?

if you definitely have herpes or a coldsore you definitely shouldn't kiss him. the risk of transmission is high. now 1in5 people have or carry the herpes simplex so there is a chance he may carry the trait so it wouldn't effect him but if he doesn't have it, herpes is highly communicable

  • Do you know for sure you have HV1? If you do and it is a herpes cold sore, if you have a exposed cold sore, that is when you are most likely to spread it. You have to avoid kissing when you are having a break out. But get tested and find out for sure that is what you have...

    • PS- Avoid oral sex in that time as well. Your partner could develop genital herpes.

    • I have never had herpes but i was told a cold sore and kissing can give you herpes

    • Cold sores are a product of Herpes.. you may have it. Most with HV1 get it as children when kissed by someone with HV1. You have to get tested to be sure and learn how to deal with it. The majority of people actually have it, had it their whole lives, and never knew...
