Girls, Does anyone have any good experiences with depo birth control?

I was just wondering if anyone has had any good experiences with this bc. Everything I've read about it has been a horror story. Good things about this bc are few and far between. There are things about non-stop bleeding/spotting, decreased libido, etc. I just started my "period", (I'm not sure if it's that or spotting tbh rn), and from what I looked up, apparently it takes your body 3 months to adjust. I would rather not uncontrollably bleed for 3 months. I have a new boyfriend I'd like to have sex with and I'm afraid this is going to ruin everything. So PLEASE, someone tell me I'm just having a period and this is not goingoing to be continous for months. Right now, it's lighter than my usual periods, kind of more like that light, rusty colored blood you get towards the end. Just leave your experiences/opinions, please.
(Just in case it weren't obvious, I already got my first shot like sometime in mid - latemail September).

  • I absolutely hated it. I was on it for about a year and the side effects were terrible. I had constant spotting, weight gain, extreme mood swings, etc. It can also be really bad for women's bodies long-term. It can cause the loss of bone density and many women have reported having trouble getting pregnant after getting off the shot. Personally, I would recommend getting on a different method of birth control.

I use NuvaRing right now and I love it. I have not had any really negative side effects. You just put the ring in for 3 weeks, take it out for a week to have your period, and then put a new one in. You don't feel it at all after it's been inserted.

  • I loved the depo, was on it for 6 years. I had a really long period to begin with and then nothing for the three months, had the next injection and then nothing for three months.
I had some weight gain but that was my only side effect - it actually chilled my mood out so so much.

Coming off it was hard, fertility wasn't restored for a long time and it had actually prevented my endometriosis from growing while I was on it. As soon as I stopped everything else started back aggressively but that's just my body, not the depo.
If I wasn't trying for a baby I'd definitely go back on it

  • I hope not I'm about to go on one this Monday and don't want my body too fucked up.

  • Everyone's body is different. I've had a great experience. I don't get my period, or cramps. The cramps I'd get would put me in the ER for a few days.

  • I have a friend who swears by it. I think side effects early on like you describe are pretty normal.

  • Never again will I do the shot. Horrible bleeding for three months straight. I lost hair. Couldn't get wet 😒

  • It takes your body 3 months to adjust to the birth control so if you didn't want to use a condom you would have to wait that 3 months I personally have no trouble with the birth control shot and have not heard anything bad about it

  • I hward you gain a ton of weight while on it

  • I've been on it since February to help with my irregular periods. I hated it at first. Spotted constantly. The first 3 months are the worst!! After that I just spotted when it was wearing off & time for my next shot. After 3 shots, I have no periods & no spotting now. I've also had decreased appetite & have lost about 15 lbs. I love it!! Just be sure to take a calcium supplement, as it robs your bones of this necessary mineral. No complaints from me. Try sticking with it, it should get better for you :)

  • I Was On Those Shots For 2 Years, If You Don't Want A Peroid No More Then You Can Get Those Shots , But You Have To Get 2 Shot Not 1 But 2 , You Have To Go To The Doctor Every 3 Months , If You Don't Want Kids Then It's Good For That Too , But depo Shots Are Good , But If You Ever Stop Taking Depo Shots You Have To Take Some Responsibility, After You Stop Going To The Doctor Every Three Months Your Period Comes Back Really Heavy And You Kinda Throw Up , It Kinda Feels Like Your Pregnant But Your Not , by the way I Would Buy Thicker Pads Or Overnight Pads

  • Hun each body is different. Some girls I know constantly had one. My client however uses it as she has no periods at all now... so can only try and find out
