I'm extremely scared to go to the gynecologist due to the Pap smear and pain. Is it painful or uncomfortable for you?

I'm 20 and would like to go to the gynecologist at 21. However, I'm extremely scared of the Pap smear. I'm a virgin and honestly putting tampons in is uncomfortable sometimes. I began watching videos on Pap smears. When they showed how much the Pap smear tool could spread, I got extremely nauseous. I think the reason is because when I was 13 I thought I had a tampon inside of me, I went to the ER and they put a small tube with a light on the end. When they put it in me, the pain was INSANE. I remember crying and wanting it to be over. So the thought of this tool is really freaking me out. I understand going to the gynecologist is important, but the thought of that tool going inside me is making me physically sick. Was your first Pap smear painful? How did you prepare yourself? How long does it take? Any extra advice would be helpful.

  • Wow, well no one likes a Pap smear but in terms of of your vajayjay will cause you it's a negative -1 on scale of ten.

Ask either your OBGYN or FNGP for either an anti anxiety or muscle relaxer and explain your situation.

But honestly, man up. This happens every year to every woman. If you can't handle a Pap smear then maybe you might want to get an IUD because you certainly don't want to handle child birth.

They do require you to take drugs prior to IUD insertion. One softens the cervix and the other is Tylenol. The insertion only hurts for like 10 seconds and then you won't have kids for 10 years.

Maybe the cervix softening drug can help with your smear if you're really that scared.

    • I didn't know they had medication so thanks for telling me. I'm just nervous for the first time that's all. I feel like after going my first time, I'll be fine for future ones because I'll know what to expect. It's just foreign to me.

    • I apologize. I misunderstood, I thought you'd been and were complaining about a check up. My friends and I all had ours no later than 15 as it is an important part of your health whether you are having sex or not. At worst it maybe feels like someone is poking you on a bruise. The swab is the easiest part of you first exam. Just relax and have a doctor you trust. If your parents are deciding the doc just get comfortable with either the nurse or your doc about The speculum and exam. If your doctor is male maybe ask the nurse if she is female to stay in the room so she can explain any medical or other issues that may arise.

  • (TMI) I've never gotten a pap but I have been to the gyno once and since I wasn't sexually active she didn't use the tool. Instead she just used a q-tip and mind you I'm normally a quiet and polite kid but when she went for it I was like AHH MOTHERFCKER TAKE IT OUT.
My story probably didn't reassure you and now GaG knows way too much about my vaj (but we're all family here). The doc should warm up the tool and lube you up to make it a less painful experience but if you're not experienced at least with tampons I imagine it's going to hurt

  • When I went it wasn't that bad. She was fast. First time is terrifying but once its over its better. I got use to it and knew what was coming next time. Some people say male drs are more gentle than female. Tell them your scared and they will talk you through it.

  • I just watched some videos and it doesn't look bad, maybe depends on the type of cell collector used. as for the stretching of your vagina, perhaps they'll have a small speculum for you

    • thanks for mho

  • Why do you wanna go in the first place? I made a search and found out it's for detecting cancer.

    • Doctors recommend women get one every 3 years, starting at the age of 21 or earlier if you're sexually active. I'm 22 and a virgin, and they've really been pressuring me to get it. So yeah. It's somewhat mandatory.
